Is this weird of me?

So, I like chips. Like most of us. I like mash. But when I eat boiled potatoes, it’s a completely different story. Bland. Nasty. Alkaline-tasting. Would need to be eaten with either sauce or something else so I can’t taste them at all.
How weird is this? That the same vegetable can taste so very different for me when is cooked in one particular way? It just becomes dry and starchy and urgh. Is it just me? It is isn’t it. 😂

I like mash. Chips are okay. I actively dislike roasties. I’d never order or cook or indeed eat boiled potatoes.

mnahmnah · 10/04/2025 22:45

New potatoes with butter, salt and pepper are delicious!

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 10/04/2025 22:45

Yes, you’re a big potatoey freak.

JK, boiled potatoes are wank. Bland and tedious. I have no time for them.

WeylandYutani · 10/04/2025 22:47

A peeled spud that has been boiled is just a white orb of disappointment.
Unpeeled baby spuds, especially Jersey Royals are lush though.

Your stomach thinks all potato is mashed.

MrsTigerface · 10/04/2025 22:48

Nope, it isn’t just you! I have always loathed boiled potatoes. Bloody awful; why on earth would you bother (for clarity, I include new potatoes here). DH seems to find them to be a delicacy, however. He’s put up with me telling him how weird he is for the last 31 years, bless him x

ItsMutinyontheBunty · 10/04/2025 22:49

Boiled potatoes are blah.
I like pretty much all potatoes. I like mash. I like beans. I cannot abide them together. The thought makes me gip!

Moier · 10/04/2025 22:49

Jersey royals with butter 😋.. l love taties. .mashed.. roasted. Chips/ baked/ wedges/ steamed ..
Got to be a good potato though. .

LittleGreenDragons · 10/04/2025 22:50

I like potatoes cooked in every way, roasted, mashed, jacket, chips... except boiled. Unless it's tinned boiled potatoes in salads.

MargaretThursday · 10/04/2025 22:50

Mashed potato is the worst food ever.
Chips or crisps are lovely.
Boiled just about tolerable.

My parents think a meal isn't complete without mash. Probably why I hate it so much.

suki1964 · 10/04/2025 22:51

I can not contemplate putting mash potato in my mouth

Yet I will eat a potato croquet

I won't eat mince and potatoes - but can eat shepherds pie

I cant do baby boils, but I can plain boiled potatoes

Love a jacket spud, chips, wedges, dauphinois, gratin. and just about any other way a spud is cooked, but no way, not ever MASH

ExpatMum41 · 10/04/2025 22:52

Urrrrgh. My mother (a terrible cook) used to serve potatoes like that all the bloody time, and even with the the wrongest of combinations such as with peas and burger patties.

I utterly refuse to eat potatoes like that (yes, even with butter) and to this day am Very picky with potatoes.

I've also learnt how to cook properly and well. Potatoes know, as they enter my kitchen, that they're in for a treat 😁

ouch321 · 10/04/2025 22:54

This is reminding me of Sam the hobbit in LoTR when he's trying to explain to Gollum about potatoes.

WeylandYutani · 10/04/2025 22:55

I like mash but it has to be super smooth. No bits. I can never afford lamb so I sometimes have a bowl of mash with lots of gravy and mint sauce, and imagine it is lamb.

DearBee · 10/04/2025 22:57

I would never serve boiled potatoes tbh.

If you've got to that stage of cooking, might as well mash them as they taste so much better.

Holiday24 · 10/04/2025 23:00

Boiled new potatoes (skin on), with plenty of butter, are delicious.

Alwaysdreamingofgoodtimes · 10/04/2025 23:00

My mum only makes roast potatoes in winter, and makes boiled potatoes in summer on a roast 😭 criminal in my opinion. Roast potatoes are the best food in the world.

Jersey Royals aren't baby potatoes though - they are adult potatoes that are available in the spring. Delisssius 😋

Boiled potatoes with loads of salt and butter are the only way forwards for me!

beasmithwentworth · 10/04/2025 23:11

I had smashed new potatoes for dinner tonight. Boil them. Squash them almost flat on a baking sheet. Olive oil. Salt, pepper and cook in the oven for 20 or so mins. Absolutely delicious. Possibly cheating as they are not boiled potatoes in their truest form.. but they were so crispy and flavoursome. I challenge you to do these OP and not love them.

I’m intrigued!😅

I agree with you. I like chips, mash, and jacket potatoes, but I would really struggle to eat boiled and new potatoes and I couldn’t eat a roast potato if my life depended on it. I also love fried mashed potato, but it’s the one thing that’s guaranteed to give me instant severe indigestion.
