Trump supporters on here…

Needing to start a new thread on here as I’m genuinely curious. A few days before the election last November, I created a thread about how unreal this totally unfit, unhinged individual was likely to be POTUS again (unbelievably)
It had a lot of responses - most MNetters were in agreement with me, but there were a few who were singing his praises, and quite honestly, frankly deluded.
Now it’s more of a monumental shit show then we could ever have imagined, I want to know - if you support Trump, do you still now? If so, why?

I occasionally follow the Trump thread on Tattle & the pro-Trumpers on that one have gone extraordinarily quiet!

American here. The Trump supporters I know have dug their heels in. Intellectually they know its a shitshow, they cant miss that. But they were so vocally supportive of him, their egos cannot let them admit he is a colossal failure. They are still trying to blame Biden...which, you can imagine, falls on angry deaf ears. The lone admission I do see is that there are much fewer Trump signs and flags than there were 5 months ago. Its a tell. It doesnt fix a damn thing, but at least some of them are seeing that they backed a loser.

I wouldn't call myself a Trump supporter, it's more that I think Harris wouldn't have been much better. Different, but bad in other ways. Like with Brexit, it's been a disaster but so would have been staying in the EU.

I must take issue with your phrase "now it’s more of a monumental shit show then we could ever have imagined" though. It's really not as much of a shit show as I'd expected it to be by now, whoever had won the election. World War Three hasn't started yet for one thing. All that's happened really are things that could have been expected to happen if Trump won - the end of global free trade was inevitable.

Our present civilization has passed its peak and we are in the decline until it is replaced by a new one. We can't stop the decline, maybe we can slow it a little, but our society is killing itself from within. This is part of the inevitable cycle, society always tries to improve itself and thus turns its back on what put it into its position in the first place.

I think a some of them were focussed solely on the trans issue. Whether they think all the collateral damage is worth it, who knows?

Also, I’m convinced there are trolls and bots here. They’re on every other social media site, so why not MN? I tried to engage with a couple on a thread about DOGE; they made some sound-bites, pro Trump/Musk comments, but when I countered with examples of the real life impacts of the cuts (I live in the US in a poor, red state so I have a front row seat) they disappeared like farts in the wind and obviously weren’t capable of/interested in a proper discussion.

I heard on The Rest Is Politics US an estimate of 20% of voters being die-hard pro Trump - seems about right. Those who haven't abandoned him now won't, regardless of what he does next. That's a lot of people but then again it leaves 80% of voters in the normal guys camp. Everyone who's just trying to make a living and wants sensible policies seems to shake their heads in disbelief.

lizzyBennet08 · 09/04/2025 16:20

Ah seriously people voted for him knowing he was a racist corrupt bully. Being bad at his job isn’t going to make people change their minds now .

Thing is, with the trans issue, loads of posters on MN over the years have said that trans is a single issue and NOTHING is more or as important. I assume they think, regardless of anything else that might happen, even personal bankruptcy, Trump appointing himself president for life and jailing opponents, even invading Canada or Greenland issue is now dealt with and so they are happy with their vote.

Jesus wept, you have a low 'shit show' bar, if you think that (so far) avoiding World War 3 is a measure of success.

An American friend messaged me the other day to say that barely an hour goes by without her getting a news alert about something awful, or unlawful, or both, that the Trump administration has said or done.

Just as a point of order...global free trade hasn't ended, just the bit involving the US. What is ending is the US' ability to influence the world - with the EU abandoning the American arms industry, Trump making it clear that there's no deal or treaty he's willing to break, and China being totally comfortable with the end of trade between the two countries...it's a new era, but one where the US doesn't have any particularly strong allies or trade relationships of note, and for at least the next five or six years US inflation will be going through the roof.

I'm honestly interested in what you think Harris might've done that would come close to that...?

A lot of people have no trouble with endorsing racist corrupt bullies as their political representatives. They're increasingly coming out of the woodwork and this site is no exception.

Yes, but the majority still voted for him knowing he was a sexist, misogynistic, racist, disablist, corrupt and indecent criminal who is quite content with grabbing women by the pussy. I mean, it's not like they didn't know what he was like during his previous term - or did they all suffer from collective amnesia, coupled with Stockholm Syndrome?

Where to even start with this wordy arse-gravy? I know. Tell us exactly WHAT Kamala Harris could have done to make things worse. Not just made up things that she would never have done like - oh, I don't know - nuke Shitsville, Idaho. Actual real things that would be worse than the livestream horror show currently being played out. I'll wait...

Presumably they'd have voted the devil in hell so long as he wasn't a Democrat.

I prefer that line of thought to the one where 20% of Americans think that's acceptable behaviour from anyone let alone the president of one of the biggest countries in the world.

His behaviour since then, notably but not least, towards Zelensky, is utterly appalling, ignorant, rude, not to mention lacking in any understanding of politics in eastern Europe.

What makes the situation worse is that jackass Vance.

Happyinarcon · 09/04/2025 17:04

I haven’t seen anything I would describe as a shit show to be honest. Trump was promising to rebalance the US trade deals since last time he was in power. His voters want industry returning to the US and reviving the rust belts so they are probably prepared to pay short term higher prices for long term benefit.
I also don’t think the US contributes much in the way of international security. Theres not a single time I can think of the US has gone into a region and made a difference. All the war zones have been war zones for decades now with no shift. Maybe it’s time for the US to say they’re not sending their cash and armies to these endless conflicts and maybe that’s a good thing

Jelliots · 09/04/2025 17:09

I really hope the US economy crashes completely - something needs to convince the Americans not to vote for idiots in the future
