Nicest butter substitute

Seeking your expert opinions! I’m currently on a calorie controlled diet - going quite well and after 6 weeks I’m really getting to grips with with the faults in my diet and adapting to better alternatives. My one weakness and downfall though is butter! I’m a big Lurpak fan. I’m looking for a lower cal/ fat alternative that still has taste and doesn’t look just like grease.

Have you switched and which do you find the best alternative? There’s so many and they’re not cheap. I normally use a butter dish not kept in the fridge so it doesn’t have to be too soft

This.
I'd rather put actual real butter in my body rather than some chemically made substitute just to lower calories.

The lurpak spreadable gives you a very similar taste, a bit fewer calories per spoonful but more importantly you can spread it thinner than butter.

But first, spread the butter on with your bread on the scales, see how many grams you actually use. It might be insignificant vs other things you eat anyway and not worth changing.

(I've been MFPing lately and counting all calories; there are some surprising calorie variations. Bread is very calorie dense! Just cutting your bread a little thinner or using a smaller loaf size would allow you to keep buttering and lose you calories overall. Quitting sandwiches has been a significant improvement in my weight loss)

Stick with butter. A little it goes a long way and nothing tastes quite like it.

Happyher · 07/04/2025 13:04

I do agree with you all - love butter but posting a screenshot of the calorie count and when you’re only on 1288 cal per day butter uses a lot! I’d rather go without than use the substitutes and sometimes use low fat mayo or laughing cow light instead

Butter is good for you. Don’t eat substitute rubbish!

GeorgeMichaelsMicStand · 07/04/2025 13:12

Eat butter. Just not with bread

saveforthat · 07/04/2025 13:12

There is no such thing as "nice" butter substitute. It's butter or nothing for me.

rainbowunicorn · 07/04/2025 13:18

You will literally only save yourself about 25 calories in a sandwich even with the lightest versions of spreads which are shit by the way. Just eat the butter.

Annoyingsquirrels · 07/04/2025 13:25

I use evoo only. I don't have sandwiches though, it is the bread that leads to weight gain due to the high glycemic index of flour.

OhBuggerandArse · 07/04/2025 13:28

My doctor told me very firmly (in the context of my raised cholesterol and need to cut back on butter 😭) that marge and butter substitutes should not even be permitted on the shelves in shops, never mind on your knife.

Springisintheairohyeah · 07/04/2025 13:32

I'd honestly stick to butter in smaller quantities. Or if you need something to add moisture, I find thick yoghurt works well in place of mayo with a bit of salt/pepper/onion and garlic power/chives etc. mixed through. And it's not ultra processed

bettybyebye · 07/04/2025 13:33

What height/weight are you OP? 1288 calories is absolutely nothing and probably completely unsustainable.
I’m watching calories at the moment and decided to stick with proper butter, just less of it!

boringbiscuits · 07/04/2025 13:35

1288 calories per day is almost certainly not enough. Was this amount suggested to you by MFP? As that is notorious for giving ridiculously low calorie allowances. Find a proper TDEE calculator and I think you'll find you can have a lot more than 1288 per day.

Happyher · 07/04/2025 13:42

I’m 5’4” and weigh 12stone. I’m happy with this amount of calories and I’ve lost 9lb so far. I go to the gym and trying to be as active as possible so I can add more calories to my daily total. Over the 7 weeks I’ve been doing it I’m finding healthier substitutes so I can eat more. I’m learning which foods have high fat and sugar content and adjusting my diet. I use the Nutracheck app recommended by NHS. I feel a lot better and slimmer. I guess I’m going to have to ration the butter or do more steps per day!

Would Country Life Lighter (blue lid) work?

Doggymummar · 07/04/2025 13:58

Just use proper butter. I'm on 1200 cals and just had a sandwich. Or use mayo instead, depending what your using it for, mayo and jam on toast might be yummy 😋
