To think that charities rely too much on short-term contracts?

It seems to be the norm in charities that short-term contracts just keep getting extended instead of offering permanent roles. Is this just a funding issue or is there another reason for it?

In my experience it's because the job roles are reliant on funding. It's often the case that staff contracts run for the length of the grants. My contract has just been extended for another two years, inline with a new pot of money that will cover core costs for that period.

Presumably you’re doing project work? It will be funded for a specific period of time. It would be unusual for a charity to be sufficiently stable to be able to keep paying for a post without secured funding. And they are probably wanting to avoid redundancy. It’s a real shame, and I understand why it’s frustrating and destabilising for you.
