Counterfeit Airpods on Vinted and Vinted Wont Refund???

Firsttimer24 · 31/03/2025 09:30

Hi, Can anyone help please. I purchased a pair of gen3 airpods on vinted, but even before they arrived, it quickly became apparent that these were counterfeit as i noticed several seller selling the same item, with the same serial number on the box. I immediately raised this (even before they arrived), then once they arrived I sent photos as vinted requested. I checked the location of the serial number on the airpod case with apple and the item didn't have a serial number on them. Once i raised the complaint the seller responded stating that he wasn't aware that they were counterfeit and offering me a £10 refund stating "it was still a good price". I screen shotted and sent this also to VInted. Vinted have come back to me and said The seller was unable to provide clear and sufficient proof of its authenticity, such as receipts or proof of purchase. This often happens when such documents are lost or discarded. How ever I need to return them for a full refund! I have read on several other posts since that this is also a well known scam as the seller will just not collect it!

How much did you pay for them? If something sounds too good to be true etc...

I do hope you haven't lost too much money but this is a life lesson tbh. Don't buy air pods on vinted for starters, but also do your research before you click buy.

Have you read the Vinted policy about counterfeit goods in their Refunding policy?

It says:

"If you have doubts about an item’s authenticity, please report this to us using the steps above.
Once you’ve suspended the order, the seller has 48 hours to give their own proof about the item to help us determine its authenticity. You can give more proof during this time too (in addition to what you provided before).
We’ll carefully review all the information and notify you with our decision:

  1. No reason to doubt the authenticity of the item — the order will be completed and the refund won’t be issued.
  2. It’s unclear if the item is authentic (ambiguous case) — you’ll need to return the item to the seller to get a refund.
  3. Item doesn’t seem to be authentic — you won’t have to return the item and we’ll refund you for it. If the counterfeit was part of a bundle, you’ll have to return any items that we determine as SNAD to get a refund for those.
If we inform the seller that the item doesn’t seem to be authentic, they have 24 hours to dispute our decision and provide new proof of authenticity. If they provide new proof within this time, we’ll review it and then make our final decision."

It sounds like they have decided that the headphones are in category 2, rather than category 3. Can you contact Vinted and see if they will reconsider?

Otherwise, depending on how much you paid, you could accept the £10 and keep the headphones, if you think that returning them would result in a failed refund. But, according to the refund policy, you would get a refund within 2 days of the parcel being delivered if the seller doesn't acknowledge the delivery.

Yes but seemingly despite the seller telling me they were unaware they are fake and also not being able to prove that they are legit, vinted are still requesting I return them for a refund, but reading several Reddit posts this is also a scam as the seller then reports issues with the return.

You bought air pods on Vinted and thought they would be genuine. Oh dear

Jurstsaynur · 31/03/2025 14:49

The seller is full of shit! The seller went a bought a load of dodgy pods from a guy in the market at a price that meant there was no way they were genuine… I know someone who’s DC is doing this - the parents don’t seem to give a damn as they think the D.C. is being ‘entrepreneurial’.
And as for people saying you’re a mug- that’s a bit harsh. There are genuine sellers on there second had ones. I did recently when I upgraded!

Jurstsaynur · 31/03/2025 14:49

What’s the sellers name on Vinted, OP???

misssunshine4040 · 31/03/2025 14:54

Do not return and push hard for a full refund.
This happened to me and they were trying to get me to send them back and pay the postage hence leaving me out of pocket.
Vinted kept pushing back saying that was their terms until I told them I would be claim them back on my card with a charge back which may incur them £400 in admin fees and that they are also breaking consumer law.

They gave me my money back and I binned the item

They tell me I have 7 days to return them other wise my payment will automatically release to the seller and its there final decision, did you get a refund before this time limit? Unfortunately i paid with credit that I had in my Vinted account so cant go down the charge back route.

It seems like this is the case, i should have done more home work but as they were advertised at £60 and the seller sent me a screen shot of a warranty check done on the apple website, which now seems to also be fake or using a duplicated serial number. Maybe its just a lesson learnt but frustrating as Ive got over 70 reviews on vinted and 5 star and trusted it until now :(

I just wouldn’t buy air pods on Vinted. Sorted.

Er, ok. But the same buyer may then start selling g other stuff too, no? And if someone is illegally selling bent gear or Vinted then sharing their user name is hardly a bad thing.
