I’ve had a cough that comes on every couple of hours. It’s dry, no crackling and comes on from a tickle in my throat. I’ve had it a while now.

AIBU for thinking this isn’t serious and nit going to drs?

Go and see your local pharmacist. They will be able to tell you if you need to see a doctor or if it’ll clear up itself. People under use pharmacists but they are great resources and stop gp’s being overwhelmed.

How long is a while and did it follow a cold?

WilfredsPies · 27/03/2025 19:47

Yes, how long is ‘a while’?

Couple of months after a cold I think

After a cold, couple of months

It is definitely worth a doctor's visit if your cough has been there a while. For example, if it is not related to your previous cold, it could be reflux, or an allergy or something more serious. Please get it checked out.

Do you take any medication regularly?
Some meds can cause irritating cough.

Cerialkiller · 27/03/2025 20:09

I get this after every cold now. A post viral cough which seems to last 4-6 weeks.

I'm going to the Dr on Monday about it because it's just not going and I want her to look down there just in case. I've been taking antihistamine which seems to help, also codeine is a cough suppressant so take that before bed. Otherwise sip sip sip water.

BananaSpanner · 27/03/2025 20:11

It sounds like a post nasal drip and they can last ages. I’m not a medic though. I’d agree that a conversation with a pharmacist might be a good starting point.

A couple of months is a phone call to the GPs surgery I think. Just to be on the safe side.

Starlight7080 · 27/03/2025 20:14

The problem with a consistent cough is you are repeatedly causing irritation in your throat which then makes you cough more.
Definitely worth getting checked .
Antihistamine helped mine . And extra strong mints/lozenges. The tickle part is awful . Especially at night

applegrumbling · 27/03/2025 20:15

I contacted my GP surgery about a cough I’ve had for this long and they immediately booked me in for a face to face.

You propably should see a doctor. But to be fair I'm on month 3 of cough after a cold (and have had 2 colds during those 3 months) and have no intention of seeing a doctor. Have had this before and there was nothing they could do so I just can't be bothered.
