To hate people changing my name

Say my name is David, but I go by Dave yet others call me Davie instead, is it rude for me to correct them? Obviously those are not my name but very similar set up and I detest the name people use, why not use " Dave" that's how I've introduced myself, that's what I use in correspondence yet some still insist on Davie! Why!

Just use your words
"My name is XX, I dont like YY"

and repeat as required

And if they continue, use a different version of their name, or suggest a GP visit for their failing memory

UtterlyOtterly · 26/03/2025 13:45

Correct them every time. I do not use the common shortened version of my name ever.

I am happy to correct the first time. Zero tolerance for subsequent usage.

Yes I understand what you mean. I like my name but I really dislike the short form. When people shorten it, I do say, politely, "It's actually...... not ......"
However, my in laws insist on calling me by the short form- (I think it's a kind of power thing) so now I ignore them until they use my full name. I'm past caring what they think!

I'm The Dude so that's what you call me. That or his Dudeness or Duder, El Duderino if you're not into the whole brevity thing.

I have a name that a number of people in my life shorten to a version I absolutely hate! It sounds harsh to my ears and I hate it. One of these is an inlaw I’ve known for 30+ years and she is also one of those people who overuses your name when she’s talking to you. I have told her I never use the short version yet she persists and now younger family members follow her lead. Drives me mad!

Gumbo · 26/03/2025 13:51

DH has this a lot and it drives him nuts!

Best of all, he'll have a conversation that will go:
DH 'Hi, my name's 'Steven'
Stranger: 'Hi. Is it Steven or Steve?'
DH 'Steven'
Stranger: 'Ok. Nice to meet you Steve'.

Just ...why????

No advice, just solidarity... People are rude!

I have a long name that can be shorted to about 4 different names. I used to hate it being shortend just given up now as people always do it. But yes correct them if it's really important to you.

Boredlass · 26/03/2025 13:57

This happens to me but I really don’t care. It’s obvious they are talking to me and it’s twattish to correct them if they don’t mean anything by it

My mother got this all the time in the care home and felt that it was a way of infantilising her, the usual exchange would go;

New carer: Oh I see your name is Margaret (not her name, but similar), I'll call you Maggie
Mother: You will not do it twice!

My mother had been a teacher in a school for maladjusted children, when she spoke, they obeyed. Carers in the home seldom needed to be told twice not to shorten her name.
