Is it normal for boyfriend/girlfriend to hang up..

Mid conversation/gaps of silence?

I’ve been seeing someone for 6/7 months and he will do this which I find so rude and odd. I will sometimes try to call back and he clicks me off.. and eventually will come back and say if I’m clicking you off it’s because I cannot answer and il call back when I’m not busy. They usually do it when in a mood (not always to do with me)

this isn’t normal is it?

No once you are no longer a teen

FeministUnderTheCatriarchy · 25/03/2025 16:12

Someone would only do this to me once...

Qmalrg · 25/03/2025 16:15

Next time he calls, don’t answer

Never answer again

It's not 'normal' but it can be common with Autistic people due to struggling in ending conversations.

And the evidence for this is...where?

My son and cousin do this and they have autism

JLou08 · 25/03/2025 18:44

It's mumsnet, not an academic article 🤣 I'm autistic, I have family and friends who are autistic, I work with autistic people. I know lots of autistic people who can not end a conversation.

Axalotllittle · 25/03/2025 18:46

It sounds like OP's boyfriend isn't "being autistic" but is hanging up in a strop. Me and DH tend to be fairly efficient with our phone calls. Eg "can you buy milk.?" "Ok" hang up. But then we are both autistic 😂

MarkingBad · 25/03/2025 18:48

OP is it during a phone conversation or is he seeing you are calling and pressing "don't answer" so it clicks off and you haven't spoken?

It can be mid conversation, literally clicked off because he is usually driving and has arrived where he needs to be or it can be where we have a moment of silence on the phone and again he hangs up as he is where he needs to be, il try to call him back naturally cos I think well did someone lose signal and he will click me off because “he is now busy” it just makes no sense to me!

he was diagnosed as on the autistic spectrum in his 20’s. He is now in his 30’s.

Several members of my family do this for those same reasons and none of them live with autism, I don't think it's necessarily a sign of it.

Yes it's annoying and a rude but I know my family do it and they do it to everyone not just me. Have a conversation with him about it, if he does it to everyone I doubt it's personal, you have to decide whether it's worth fighting for.

localnotail · 25/03/2025 19:03

Its simply a sign of disrespect. They dont respect you, that's all there is to it.
