That we still need dinner

Littlebittiredoflife · 23/03/2025 18:54

DH is saying we don't need dinner tonight as we've already had three meals. Our "meals" were 2 or 3 American pancakes for breakfast with fruit and a drizzle of syrup, smoked salmon and cream cheese bagel with crisps, cucumber and tomato for lunch and a scone with jam and cream. Admittedly lunch was around 2:30pm and scone around 5:30pm.

I know it's not the healthiest day and we could do with a bit more veg for sure but aibu to think that we do all need an evening meal still? DH is often saying do we actually need dinner if we end up eating lunch late. I'm not the best judge of food as I overeat but I'm sure DC will still need feeding this evening

It would be a light supper for the kids - cheese on toast or pasta , something light after the scones

MissyB1 · 23/03/2025 18:56

Yes you do need to eat again, I would be doing something like a vegetable soup.

faerietales · 23/03/2025 18:56

I wouldn't do a full meal - maybe beans on toast or soup or something.

ThejoyofNC · 23/03/2025 18:58

I don't know in what world a scone is a meal, but I don't want to go there.

Enderwhere · 23/03/2025 18:59

Scones aren't dinner so I would definitely be having dinner personally

Amammai · 23/03/2025 18:59

That all sound perfectly normal for a weekend and not even hugely over indulgent!

If your husband doesn’t want anything else then that’s fine, just make something for you and your son? My DS who is 7 would definitely want to eat again. I would definitely have something too!

If you want a full meal, go for it or if not just have a sandwich/beans of toast/soups etc.

ohyesido · 23/03/2025 18:59

I don’t think that’s enough to warrant missing dinner, maybe if you’d had a lunch at Cosmo at 3pm then yea. Sounds like a normal breakfast and lunch with a cheeky cake

SleeplessInWherever · 23/03/2025 18:59

If I was hungry, I’d eat.

He doesn’t have to if he isn’t, but whether you do is up to you.

wherearemypastnames · 23/03/2025 19:00

Breakfast, lunch, mid afternoon snack
yip, dinner next

Powderblue1 · 23/03/2025 19:00

I’d have something light for tea

Gundogday · 23/03/2025 19:01

Scone isn’t much fur an evening meal. I’d probably pizza, toasted sandwich, macaroni cheese or something else light and easy.

Agreed!

A scone is not a meal! If you or the kids are hungry then of course you eat again.

ShillyShallySherbet · 23/03/2025 19:02

I wouldn’t be hungry to eat an evening meal if I had a cream tea at 5:30 and that sounds like a very large and late lunch. So I’m with your DH.

JoyousEagle · 23/03/2025 19:03

Is he counting a scone as a meal? My appetite is normally more towards what gets accused of being competitive undereating on MN, but I wouldn’t class a scone as a meal!

IPM · 23/03/2025 19:03

Make them a sandwich if they're hungry?

TwentyTwentyFive · 23/03/2025 19:04

You honestly think a scone is fit to be described as a large late lunch...in what universe?

YessandNno · 23/03/2025 19:04

None of those are proper meals. You've basically just had three snacks.

Bagels etc was the large late lunch, the scone was at 5:30

A smoked salmon bagel is hardly "a very large" lunch

Louise295 · 23/03/2025 19:05

You had breakfast lunch and a snack so I’d say you need dinner. If I was hungry I’d eat again if not I wouldn’t but I would definitely be making the kids something

lalaloopyhead · 23/03/2025 19:07

It depends on whether you are hungry surely? If your DH isn't hungry just get something for yourself.
I wouldn't have had a scone at 5.30 as that seems a bit late...but I would possibly have one after dinner so all the same difference really.

GlitteryUnicornSparkles · 23/03/2025 19:07

But you haven't had 3 meals, a scone with jam and cream is a snack or a post meal dessert not a meal.

A bagel with a light topping and a tiny bit of salad and a bag of crisps isn't exactly a big or heavy lunch.

Yes you probably do still need an evening meal, though if lunch was late then it probably only needs to be something light or also needs to be a bit later. Surely you decide based on whether you are actually hungry though and not because of some magic number!

DustyMaiden · 23/03/2025 19:07

Those that are hungry eat.

RaininSummer · 23/03/2025 19:08

Thats only two meals really isn't it. The scone is either a snack or part of lunch. If your husband isn't hungry he doesn't have to eat dinner

IPM · 23/03/2025 19:08

This ☝

It doesn't have to be a big deal.
