That we still need dinner

Littlebittiredoflife · 23/03/2025 18:54

DH is saying we don't need dinner tonight as we've already had three meals. Our "meals" were 2 or 3 American pancakes for breakfast with fruit and a drizzle of syrup, smoked salmon and cream cheese bagel with crisps, cucumber and tomato for lunch and a scone with jam and cream. Admittedly lunch was around 2:30pm and scone around 5:30pm.

I know it's not the healthiest day and we could do with a bit more veg for sure but aibu to think that we do all need an evening meal still? DH is often saying do we actually need dinner if we end up eating lunch late. I'm not the best judge of food as I overeat but I'm sure DC will still need feeding this evening

Joking aside I don't think it's the quantity of food, it's the type, pancakes for breakfast, smoked salmon and cream cheese Bagels for lunch, scones with cream in the afternoon (don't get me wrong sounds delicious) it's carb heavy , not even a variety , with different starches and whole grains, but white processed bread type carbs, it's fairly high calorie but won't keep you full. I probably would eat after that but not more bread, maybe an omelette and salad.

I'm terrible at thinking what to have for lunches. Growing up it was cereal for breakfast and sandwiches for lunch every single day. Soup is always eaten with bread and I can't bear omelettes. I sometimes have yoghurt for breakfast but it upsets my digestive system, so I a really am at a loss for breakfast. I thought homemade pancakes would be ok, especially with the fruit added. I need to get more creative with salads for lunches. Dinners are usually carb heavy too. I just can't think what DC would eat that isn't carb heavy, so definitely open to ideas of what others do for their evening meal.

If you’re hungry then eat something. If you’re not then don’t. Just because you haven’t had three proper meals it doesn’t mean you have to have dinner if you’re not hungry.

BitOutOfPractice · 23/03/2025 22:28

Plus, it’s Sunday, who’s to say this is an average day? Jeez the sanctimonious arseholery on here is unbelievable!

Ooo that’s carb heavy. Ooo that’s so much food. Ooo I couldn’t eat a whole scone.

My husband and I fall out over this. He wants a dinner every night. Just today we had breakfast, lunch, then homemade scones around 5. He still wants dinner so whipped up spaghetti Bolognese. I had a few mouthfuls to save arguments. I've just had a banana.

People have different appetites I guess.

Does anyone eat 2 big scones in one sitting?

No, we share one between the four of us anything else is pure gluttony!

I have carbs at least two meals a day just switch up which ones, wild or brown rice, sweet potatoes, wholegrain pasta, I'm also a fan of things like daal really easy to make and if it's not a complete meal for you or you're tempted to have bread with it have daal with chicken or a piece of fish, have some green veg on the side. I'm definitely not a calorie counter but just find lots of white carbs doesn't fill me up, I had gestational diabetes so had to experiment with carbs that didn't spike my blood sugars.
I do like yogurt for breakfast, this morning I had Greek yogurt with chopped strawberries and pear, walnuts and a drizzle of honey, if you can't tolerate yoghurt what about oats? Porridge or overnight oats are popular here.

I don't think what you've eaten today is loads

I struggle with meals because I prefer alcohol 😉

I personally wouldn’t want much but it’s quite dependent on scone size too. Some cheese and biscuits maybe

Sorry if I’ve hit a nerve here. Happy to scoff a cake or scone myself as a treat but normalising binge eating by getting defensive over it is a real health problem in the UK.

OppsUpsSide · 23/03/2025 23:15

I wouldn’t make mine dinner after that, they wouldn’t eat it, they’d prob have milk and a banana before bed.

Ok we’ll agree to disagree, I find bagels and scones very heavy and they fill me up.

I’m jealous.

TheHerboriste · 23/03/2025 19:27

Pancakes, bagels and scones are quite a few carbs for one day.

Maybe a salad for dinner, or soup. Certainly not pasta, potatoes etc.

OP, I hope you had a massive McDonald’s with a side of mozzarella sticks, a McFlurry and a milkshake to really send these “maybe a salad” posters into a frenzy.

Dear God, we're talking about 2 scones. That's not binge eating. FFS

& and no, you haven't hit a nerve. Don't turn round on me because I've picked up on your ridiculous statement.

Philodendrine · 23/03/2025 23:37

Home made pancakes and fruit for breakfast are absolutely fine OP and a lot better than loads of other options. Egg, milk, flour, butter, bit of sugar and fruit are all completely normal, minimally processed foods and a darn sight better than something like a chemical-laden protein shake or ultra processed cereal. Plus they are fun and honestly food is meant to be enjoyed. Crack on.

Not even two scones, the OP says a scone! Which I'm sure she'll be accused of 'stuffing her face' with.

Yes, I know the OP only had one scone, but this conversation branched off because someone mentioned (shock horror) eating two scones. Then the poster I addressed has decided eating two scones is Ben eating🙄🙄

Calories in pancakes 550 minimum, calories in salmon bagel 462, calories in cream tea 672 so total of 1684 calories. You don’t need dinner, maybe a bowl of soup

how do you know how many calories she needs? You don’t. Unless you have calculated her BMR and know how much OP exercises FFS and you can’t even calculate how many she’s eaten properly without weighing and measuring stuff
Let alone declaring she doesn’t need more food

that could be too many calories for some people and too big a deficit for others

I think we established this weekend that 3 sweet naans and 11pm scrambled eggs are the way forward.

FWIW a scone at 5.30 would tide me over for a bit but I would want something else later.

I have questions...
Are these separate snacks or are the eggs served WITH the sweet naans? As that is concerning. 11pm eggs should only be served with savoury naans. Not the ones with sultanas in....

Well my maintenance calories at the moment are around 2750, so even while eating to a deficit I would not 'not need dinner' after that amount of food.
And saying you don't need dinner but should have some soup... food eaten in the evening IS dinner. If calling it dinner means you are thinking a full roast then no- I probably wouldn't be hungry for a big meal, but a normal dinner- absolutely.
And having kids I do think that there should be a healthy meal provided and expected times. When you are an adult living alone then sure- skip meals if you want. But if you are responsible for feeding other people then assuming their hunger levels by your own is really rude and inappropriate.
And depending on the age and activity levels of the kids they might well he starving, I know I would have been as a child.

Goatinthegarden · 24/03/2025 05:21

The timing of everything is the problem. I wouldn’t be hungry for dinner if I’d had the 5:30 scone, but I’d have to have something, otherwise I’d be starving later.

I don’t eat breakfast, so I’d probably have had the lunch at 12, scone early afternoon, and then been buzzing for a full meal at about 7pm in the evening.

NotMilanese · 24/03/2025 05:50

I'm surprised that anyone is considering skipping an evening meal. Surely dinner is as much about the ritual of sitting down together and sharing food as it is consuming calories? Even if some of us in the family are not hungry, we gather at the table and everyone eats what they want (no one is forced to clean their plate). It's a way of marking the wind - down part of the day. Something with veg and protein seems like a good idea (like chicken vegetable soup, not creamy) after the day you've described. Pancakes for Sunday breakfast seems fine! If you're looking for other healthier breakfast options, smoked salmon and/or eggs on toast or peanut or other nut butter on wholemeal bread (with banana?) are pretty speedy and healthy for most. Hope you enjoyed your dinner.

ShillyShallySherbet · 24/03/2025 06:52

I’ve never made a comment on mumsnet that’s upset people as much as saying that I think I’d also be full after that amount of food in a day 😂 chill your beans people, it’s just food!
