That we still need dinner

Littlebittiredoflife · 23/03/2025 18:54

DH is saying we don't need dinner tonight as we've already had three meals. Our "meals" were 2 or 3 American pancakes for breakfast with fruit and a drizzle of syrup, smoked salmon and cream cheese bagel with crisps, cucumber and tomato for lunch and a scone with jam and cream. Admittedly lunch was around 2:30pm and scone around 5:30pm.

I know it's not the healthiest day and we could do with a bit more veg for sure but aibu to think that we do all need an evening meal still? DH is often saying do we actually need dinner if we end up eating lunch late. I'm not the best judge of food as I overeat but I'm sure DC will still need feeding this evening

Why does it have to be a joint decision? If he’s not hungry he doesn’t need to eat, if you are then go ahead.

mn1974 · 23/03/2025 19:47

Just based on what what you listed as having consumed today, yes I would still have dinner.
But I do wonder if there's something more to it if he often suggests this. You mentioned you tend to overeat. Do you really or he tells you that you do?
Do you and/or DS have a weight problem? Even then, if it's your DH cooking he can help by cooking more healthy and nutritionals meals and not suggesting a child skips dinner...

Calliopespa · 23/03/2025 19:48

Soup and toast.

honeylulu · 23/03/2025 19:51

What it comes down to is as simple as - are you hungry? And/or are the kids hungry?

Hungry people should have another light meal. If not hungry just skip it and aim for more balanced meals tomorrow. Don't get hung up on timing and content of what you ate.

My mother is terrible for seeming to think food has zero calories if it isn't cooked or doesn't contain meat. But if you feel replete, I would say you're fine. On the other hand if your tummy is rumbling then it's irrelevant what you ate earlier, have something else!

I hope your husband doesn't do the typical lazy man thing. "Oh I'm not hungry" and then when you start making yourself scrambled egg and toast decide he wants some after all. Grrr.

Onlyvisiting · 23/03/2025 19:51

If he isn't hungry he doesn't have to eat, but you should absolutely be providing a normal balanced meal for the DC. Do you think he genuinely doesn't think his children need an evening meal (and scones are a snack, not a main meal) or is he just looking for an easy life and too lazy to sort a meal?

Gwenhwyfar · 23/03/2025 19:51

Enderwhere · 23/03/2025 18:59

Scones aren't dinner so I would definitely be having dinner personally

If it was two big scones each I wouldn't. One scone and I'd go by whether I feel hungry or not.

Charlize43 · 23/03/2025 19:52

You can't just live off junk food!

None of that seems like a proper meal: Protein & vegetables, followed by fruit.

They've had fruit and cucumber and tomato. Do you never have a day that isn't perfectly balanced?!

Who can’t 😂

I would hardly call a bagel junk food either, it’s not like she’s asking if she needs a 7th kebab

ShillyShallySherbet · 23/03/2025 19:02

I wouldn’t be hungry to eat an evening meal if I had a cream tea at 5:30 and that sounds like a very large and late lunch. So I’m with your DH.

Edited

In what world is a bagel and some crisps and cucumber and tomatoes a “very large lunch”? Roast beef, gravy, Yorkshire pudding, cauliflower cheese, roast and mashed potatoes, green beans and carrots with trifle to follow is a very large lunch.

MrsSunshine2b · 23/03/2025 19:56

I'd probably just give the kids a sandwich or a bowl of cereal.

Hedjwitch · 23/03/2025 19:56

I wouldn't want or need an evening meal after 3 lots of food already. If children were hungry they could have toast or cereal.
I find 3 meals a day a lot( and no I'm not skinny,size16). Today had bacon roll for late breakfast so didn't need lunch. Salad and quiche for dinner. But if folk are hungry, then feed them.

weareallalittlebitthesame · 23/03/2025 19:58

Scones could probably be enough for lunch on a day you’ve had breakfast but not for your evening meal 🤷‍♀️

SawItOnTikTok · 23/03/2025 19:58

I see the teeny tinies are out in force. Why not just have a sniff of an apple OP that’ll fill you up.

This ☝

It doesn't have to be a big deal.

Having a little ponder on mumsnet isn’t making it a ‘big deal’

I wouldn’t be hungry at bedtime if I didn’t eat again. I would move dinner later to after 8pm.

Littlebittiredoflife · 23/03/2025 19:59

Hopefully I can answer all the questions. Yes I genuinely overeat- I wouldn't say today is one of those days. My DH is genuinely questioning do we need dinner because he isn't hungry but he is the type of person who can go without meals no problem but he can also eat a lot too. I don't recognise when I'm full and he doesn't recognise when he's hungry. I eat when I'm not hungry too, hence why I'm asking here if we do need another meal. One of DC is overweight and the other isn't. He isn't suggesting we skip a meal to lose weight he just can't imagine that we'd be hungry enough for another meal. But he cooked dinner. I'm not saying what it was because it wasn't the healthiest but there was some protein and more veg in it.

Does anyone eat 2 big scones in one sitting?

CoffeeCakeAndALattePlease · 23/03/2025 20:01

I’d never eat only one scone, so assuming I’d had 2 with jam and cream then I’d be quite full from that. I’d not want a fully cooked meal but would need something else…. probably soup or something like that.

I really hope it was a burger. Ideally with loads of cheese, and absolutely no salad. 😂

JLou08 · 23/03/2025 20:03

Feed your DC if he is hungry. Eat if you are hungry. Your DH can do what he likes. Not really that big of a deal.

He did do the thing if saying he wasn't hungry but eating anyway. He did cook and wash up though so not lazy!

Bagels etc was the large late lunch, the scone was at 5:30

I wouldn't have classed the bagel and crisps as a large lunch either.

soupyspoon · 23/03/2025 20:06

I havent read the thread, so sorry if already established

But is everyone/you/kids hungry?

If so, you eat, you eat according to how hungry you are, it might be 'dinner'. Might be a light snack. Might be something cold or hot dependant on what people want

A scone in the afternoon is surely a snack, you then have your evening meal later?

Singinghollybob · 23/03/2025 20:07

SpanThatWorld · 23/03/2025 19:11

A bagel with crisps is a large lunch? It's a round sandwich

And with the middle missing!

Well, me I suppose. In some cafes, you get two together. Then I wouldn't eat another meal afterwards I suppose.
