That we still need dinner

Littlebittiredoflife · 23/03/2025 18:54

DH is saying we don't need dinner tonight as we've already had three meals. Our "meals" were 2 or 3 American pancakes for breakfast with fruit and a drizzle of syrup, smoked salmon and cream cheese bagel with crisps, cucumber and tomato for lunch and a scone with jam and cream. Admittedly lunch was around 2:30pm and scone around 5:30pm.

I know it's not the healthiest day and we could do with a bit more veg for sure but aibu to think that we do all need an evening meal still? DH is often saying do we actually need dinner if we end up eating lunch late. I'm not the best judge of food as I overeat but I'm sure DC will still need feeding this evening

A scone does not equal a meal. Even if it was served with cream and jam.

DH doesn't have to eat dinner if he doesn't want it. But he can't dictate what others eat.

TheHerboriste · 23/03/2025 19:27

Pancakes, bagels and scones are quite a few carbs for one day.

Maybe a salad for dinner, or soup. Certainly not pasta, potatoes etc.

Is there a limit? Who is to say why or whether OP should have pasta and potatoes later?

(and I say that as someone who doesnt eat pasta, potatoes, bagels, scones or pancakes, but thats my choice, theres nothing wrong with eating those things)

Mansionscoldandgrey · 23/03/2025 20:11

A scone is a snack before you start cooking a roast. If you have have any left over, they make an excellent bread and butter pudding.

ThejoyofNC · 23/03/2025 18:58

I don't know in what world a scone is a meal, but I don't want to go there.

Ha ha ha! It may not seem like much, but believe me if it is a cream tea, i.e. a scone with jam and real clotted cream, it is actually very filling.

Cucy · 23/03/2025 20:13

So you had breakfast, lunch and a scone.

That’s a normal day of food on top of dinner.

Of course you should have dinner if you are hungry.

If DH is not hungry that’s fine but if you are then you should definitely have something.

Hopefully I can answer all the questions. Yes I genuinely overeat- I wouldn't say today is one of those days. My DH is genuinely questioning do we need dinner because he isn't hungry but he is the type of person who can go without meals no problem but he can also eat a lot too. I don't recognise when I'm full and he doesn't recognise when he's hungry. I eat when I'm not hungry too, hence why I'm asking here if we do need another meal. One of DC is overweight and the other isn't. He isn't suggesting we skip a meal to lose weight he just can't imagine that we'd be hungry enough for another meal. But he cooked dinner. I'm not saying what it was because it wasn't the healthiest but there was some protein and more veg in it.

You sound a bit like Jack Sprat and his wife. 😉

It sounds as though everything was resolved. Having said that, I'm always puzzled by people who think that because they aren't hungry (or tired or anxious or whatever) that no one else could possibly be. Bizarre.

PLHJ84 · 23/03/2025 20:17

I wouldn’t want to eat much after all that. I might have some soup or toast if i was hungry but not a full on meal

Bobnobob · 23/03/2025 20:01

Does anyone eat 2 big scones in one sitting?

Um, yes?!

Bitofanchange · 23/03/2025 20:26

Order an Uber eats Indian takeaway, with rice and naan.

No one would judge you!

Chungai · 23/03/2025 20:29

Bogginsthe3rd · 23/03/2025 19:30

This sounds like a large amount for one day (and very carb heavy) and I wouldn't add to it. Do you often overeat ?

ITS NOT OVEREATING

Yes it's a bit bready but it's ONE DAY

I'd definitely have an evening meal after that.

Oh and I'm a size 8-10 and have been for 12+ years before anyone asks.

Emanresuunknown · 23/03/2025 20:31

ShillyShallySherbet · 23/03/2025 19:02

I wouldn’t be hungry to eat an evening meal if I had a cream tea at 5:30 and that sounds like a very large and late lunch. So I’m with your DH.

Edited

In what world is a bagel with a few crisps, cucumber and tomato a 'very large lunch' 🤔
That's a perfectly normal lunch, some people might even have some fruit or yoghurt with it and it still would not class as a 'very large lunch' ffs

ThejoyofNC · 23/03/2025 18:58

I don't know in what world a scone is a meal, but I don't want to go there.

Beautifully phrased 👌

And no not a world I want to visit!

I've just been to the shop for cake and lindor. That's not a meal, either.

Agree. Mumsnet is full of restrictive eaters.

My extremely skinny 9yo would eat a filled bagel, a bag of crisps, fruit, crudités, greek yoghurt and a small flapjack for lunch and be starving 4 hours later.

The food listed by OP is probably 1500 or so calories I reckon. I'd be hungry on that.

I think it’s the crisps putting people off.

Only fat people eat crisps. A bag of McCoys is a one way ticket to being airlifted out of bed.

Agree with this^
As @DustyMaiden said : Those that are hungry eat.
If your DH is not hungry - he doesn’t.

Songstress9 · 23/03/2025 20:39

I think we established this weekend that 3 sweet naans and 11pm scrambled eggs are the way forward.

FWIW a scone at 5.30 would tide me over for a bit but I would want something else later.

katepilar · 23/03/2025 20:41

Its fine if he is not hungry or cant be arsed to make anything while being hungry but saying this is enough food for a day is weird, unless its what you would normally eat.

arethereanyleftatall · 23/03/2025 20:44

This whole thread is batshit.

you’re both adults. Eat if you’re hungry. Don’t if you’re not.

can’t believe that needs to be written

Azureshores · 23/03/2025 20:45

Everyone's different. Today I've had roast chicken with a jacket potato and salad and two pears. But I am on mounjaro and trying to lose weight. Dc's have had cereal and toast and a few snacky things as well as the chicken dinner and fruit. Dh had the same as me and porridge.

There's no one size fits all it depends how hungry you are - I don't believe people "need" to have 3 meals a day.

soupyspoon · 23/03/2025 20:46

I cant believe it needs to be written that different people have different hunger levels and capacities and appetites, but still come the ridiculous 'restrictive eater' comments and teeny tinies comments.

And its all over another thread too.

Nutmuncher · 23/03/2025 20:49

DrummingMousWife · 23/03/2025 18:55

It would be a light supper for the kids - cheese on toast or pasta , something light after the scones

cheese on toast or pasta is ‘light’? 🫢

Bertiel33 · 23/03/2025 20:53

A scone is not a meal its a scone. But I don't live in competitive undereating land where a chicken and a massive salad should sustain us for a week.

BillieJ · 23/03/2025 20:54

I wouldn't want dinner - maybe something snacky later, maybe not. When I was in my twenties, I could easily have put away a meal.

Surely, the question is, are you hungry? Not what would everyone else do.

Loub1987 · 23/03/2025 20:55

Eat / make dinner if you and the kids want it.

MumWifeOther · 23/03/2025 20:58

I wouldn’t need to eat again. My husband would, and my kids would too. I would be making them dinner as normal and choose not to eat myself. If I got hungry, I’d be happy with some crackers and houmous or anything picky.
