That we still need dinner

Littlebittiredoflife · 23/03/2025 18:54

DH is saying we don't need dinner tonight as we've already had three meals. Our "meals" were 2 or 3 American pancakes for breakfast with fruit and a drizzle of syrup, smoked salmon and cream cheese bagel with crisps, cucumber and tomato for lunch and a scone with jam and cream. Admittedly lunch was around 2:30pm and scone around 5:30pm.

I know it's not the healthiest day and we could do with a bit more veg for sure but aibu to think that we do all need an evening meal still? DH is often saying do we actually need dinner if we end up eating lunch late. I'm not the best judge of food as I overeat but I'm sure DC will still need feeding this evening

I’ve never eaten by the clock, I just follow my appetite. Now called “ intuitive eating” I believe.
i suggest you do the same.
perhaps crackers and cheese?

Abbie22222 · 23/03/2025 19:25

Me and my daughter would be full after that, my husband and son would need something else. Just make something quick for whoever is hungry

TheHerboriste · 23/03/2025 19:27

Pancakes, bagels and scones are quite a few carbs for one day.

Maybe a salad for dinner, or soup. Certainly not pasta, potatoes etc.

PrettyDetails · 23/03/2025 19:27

Breakfast: two rounds of toast and jam
Lunch: 1 smoked salmon and rocket sandwich and 1 packet of crisps
Snacks-1 packet of M&S chocolate covered custard creams. I was shocked to discover that there are very few in the packet, so ate the lot.
Supper-cooking right now-chicken, baked potato, broad beans, gravy.

None of the first three are large meals.

If you're hungry eat and don't be made to feel guilty about it.

lovescats3 · 23/03/2025 19:28

a scone isn't a meal!

Namechangedforspooky · 23/03/2025 19:28

I def wouldn’t bother. They can pick out of the fridge if they’re still hungry!

TBF my dh drives me mad with this, insisting on cooked meals when we’ve already had loads to eat. He normally cooks for whoever is hungry then leftovers go in lunchboxes so a reasonable solution

Just to clarify although he said that he would never stop us having a meal and would even be the one to cook it even if he wasn't hungry so there is no worries about his dictating it. He just questions it often and today I had examples of the food.

Of course he can't stop you having a meal but I think him stating that he wouldn't stop you is off and the fact he mentions it often.

Just stop it right now.

Bogginsthe3rd · 23/03/2025 19:30

This sounds like a large amount for one day (and very carb heavy) and I wouldn't add to it. Do you often overeat ?

Thisisittheapocalypse · 23/03/2025 19:31

A scone isn't a meal

Of course your DCs need some kind of dinner. They burn calories at a much higher rate than you do and need more food.

BitOutOfPractice · 23/03/2025 19:32

Why is he the arbiter of hungriness? And surely eating when you are hungry is the definition of healthy eating. So eat if you want to. Don’t doubt yourself or your children op.

I suspect this is part of a bigger picture op and I hope you are ok

My thoughts, exactly. He’s being weird.

BuntyCollocks · 23/03/2025 19:33

Some wild competitive undereating.

I’ve had gastric surgery and I’d have dinner. Mumsnet is unreal.

It's not a large amount at all!

Today I've had...

Coffee, flapjack bar thing, banana, protein shake
Tuna sandwich on wholemeal sourdough
Cheese snack
Crisps
Poached egg on wholemeal sourdough with prosciutto, avocado, spinach.

Half tempted to go have a slice of white toast and butter.

Current calories for the day is 1700, I'm very short and not that heavy but I do a ton of exercise and I'm trying to lose weight. Most people can have that much without worrying about it..

Do you often competitively undereat @Bogginsthe3rd ?

Zanatdy · 23/03/2025 19:35

I wouldn’t be having a main meal, something light. One day without veg etc won’t harm

BitOutOfPractice · 23/03/2025 19:35

He’d never stop you eating a meal. He’d just question you, make you doubt yourself, play on your insecurities …

Ginmonkeyagain · 23/03/2025 19:36

Oh just hav some bloody dinner. You haven't eaten that much.

JarvisIsland · 23/03/2025 19:36

We often end up with meal schedules like this on a weekend due to activities. We’d chuck some ham and some veg in a couple of eggs and call it omlette on toast if we were really feeling like something, or take the lazier options of scrambled egg or beans on toast. We’d deffo do some salad on the side. About 8ish. Not eating something a bit more substantial will definitely lead to fridge raiding and/or chain sending biscuits about half 9 otherwise.

Trovindia · 23/03/2025 19:37

ShillyShallySherbet · 23/03/2025 19:05

Bagels etc was the large late lunch, the scone was at 5:30

A bagel is not, in any universe, a large lunch. It's equivalent to a sandwich!

YANBU OP. A full dinner is required.

It’s really not…

Me and my children would not be full after only a scone for tea, after a fairly normal sounding breakfast and lunch, and I would make us a lightish dinner.

Your DH needs to stop commenting on what you and the children eat…

Marchhare80 · 23/03/2025 19:40

I would prepare a light, healthy tea for the children.
I’d eat if I was hungry, but probably wouldn’t want a large meal- maybe cheese and apple or soup etc. My husband would probably eat something similar later on.

I definitely wouldn’t be making a substantial family meal if we’d had scones at 5:30.

Blondebrownorred · 23/03/2025 19:41

We wouldn't be eating another meal after eating that.

Jellycatspyjamas · 23/03/2025 19:43

I swear I should be featuring on “My 600lb Life” or whatever it’s called, based on what I eat and how it compares to Mumsnet

You and me both, my kids and I would be having dinner - and I don’t mean cheese on toast or an apple.

IlooklikeNigella · 23/03/2025 19:44

I don't think you're overeating, I'd be hungry after those small meals. They are very low in protein and fiber. Are you worried about your weight? If yes i suspect you're not eating too much, just eating the wrong things.

For today I'd definitely eat another meal; scrambled eggs / omelette and some soup.

Xmasbaby11 · 23/03/2025 19:45

That’s not a lot of food to me and I’d expect to have dinner as well - but having the scone late is a bit confusing as it’d be late to start cooking.

I might have a bowl of soup or cereal, or something v easy to prepare.
