That we still need dinner

Littlebittiredoflife · 23/03/2025 18:54

DH is saying we don't need dinner tonight as we've already had three meals. Our "meals" were 2 or 3 American pancakes for breakfast with fruit and a drizzle of syrup, smoked salmon and cream cheese bagel with crisps, cucumber and tomato for lunch and a scone with jam and cream. Admittedly lunch was around 2:30pm and scone around 5:30pm.

I know it's not the healthiest day and we could do with a bit more veg for sure but aibu to think that we do all need an evening meal still? DH is often saying do we actually need dinner if we end up eating lunch late. I'm not the best judge of food as I overeat but I'm sure DC will still need feeding this evening

Hmmm is it his turn to cook?

I wouldn’t be hungry to eat an evening meal if I had a cream tea at 5:30 and that sounds like a very large and late lunch. So I’m with your DH.

How is a bagel with salmon and cream cheese plus crisps, cucumber and tomato a very large lunch?

soupyspoon · 23/03/2025 21:08

Generally speaking a 3 course meal is a large lunch.

A 'meat and two veg' type meal is a lunch/dinner

Bagel is a light lunch/snacky lunch

In my head

However my parents and my partner cant really eat dinners now, my parents have always eaten very small portions and would go home from my house saying they wouldnt eat tea later after being fed by me (which they wouldnt)

Everyone has a different capacity.

Does anyone eat 2 big scones in one sitting?

I totally would ( 5'5", 9st 5 BMI 21), but if it was as late as 5:30 pm might well skip dinner. Would still feed the DCs however......

LuckySantangelo35 · 23/03/2025 21:26

DrummingMousWife · 23/03/2025 18:55

It would be a light supper for the kids - cheese on toast or pasta , something light after the scones

@DrummingMousWife

is pasta or cheese and toast light? I would say those are pretty heavy, stodgy options

merryhouse · 23/03/2025 21:27

ffs, lunch was a sandwich, minimal salad and a packet of crisps. That is not a large lunch.

And a scone is not even tea, never mind dinner.

I'd be expecting at the very least sausage chips and beans... but would be vaguely placated by a thick or a chunky vegetable soup and nice bread.

LuckySantangelo35 · 23/03/2025 21:28

MissyB1 · 23/03/2025 18:56

Yes you do need to eat again, I would be doing something like a vegetable soup.

@MissyB1

what if she’s not hungry though? No point forcing something down for the sake of it

ChinaChina · 23/03/2025 21:29

Bung a couple of pizzas I the oven.

LuckySantangelo35 · 23/03/2025 21:29

Gundogday · 23/03/2025 19:01

Scone isn’t much fur an evening meal. I’d probably pizza, toasted sandwich, macaroni cheese or something else light and easy.

@Gundogday

those are easy options yes, light deffo not!

Hopefully I can answer all the questions. Yes I genuinely overeat- I wouldn't say today is one of those days. My DH is genuinely questioning do we need dinner because he isn't hungry but he is the type of person who can go without meals no problem but he can also eat a lot too. I don't recognise when I'm full and he doesn't recognise when he's hungry. I eat when I'm not hungry too, hence why I'm asking here if we do need another meal. One of DC is overweight and the other isn't. He isn't suggesting we skip a meal to lose weight he just can't imagine that we'd be hungry enough for another meal. But he cooked dinner. I'm not saying what it was because it wasn't the healthiest but there was some protein and more veg in it.

Is your husband called Jack Sprat, by chance?😉

Sounds like you had a decent dinner anyway, no argument. It's all good!

Sounds like your DH is concerned about yours and / or your DCs’ weight…

I have a DC who overeats and it is a real battle to keep her weight (at the upper end) or where it should be. I have another who is really fussy, eats less healthily as a result, and is like a rake as he naturally stops when he’s had what he needs. I get it, it’s hard depending on the hand you are given. I am always hungry!!

That’s not a hugely healthy food day but I wouldn’t say it’s excessively bad. If you are DC are eating like that everyday and then having dinner that’s a different matter though.

I’d definitely want some dinner after a scone at 5:30 (but I’m not someone who can skip dinner even on Christmas Day). I’d probably keep it light though so some soup or a sandwich.

Tbh I wouldnt count a bagel with a bit of salad and crisps a very large lunch? Nor one scone as a 'cream tea'

The whole day is a bit funny food wise, sharing a pizza for those who are hungry seems a good end to this day and then back to more normal eating tomorrow.

RedCatBlueCatYellowCat · 23/03/2025 21:46

Need and want are different things.
I wouldn't need another meal but I would probably want it. I am trying to retrain my brain and belly to only eat when I am actually hungry rather than because it is X time. Or because I am bored.

I would still feed kids though.

Order an Uber eats Indian takeaway, with rice and naan.

No one would judge you!

No one would judge her?! Have you read this thread?

elliejjtiny · 23/03/2025 21:57

Depends. If it was 1 little scone with a bit of jam/cream then yes I would want some egg on toast or something. If it was a full afternoon tea with 2 big scones piled high with jam and cream then I probably wouldn't be hungry.

lily219 · 23/03/2025 22:05

You don't 'need' dinner. If you're not hungry, don't eat. If you're a bit peckish, have a snack. If you want dinner, have dinner.

GoldPoster · 23/03/2025 22:06

Calories in pancakes 550 minimum, calories in salmon bagel 462, calories in cream tea 672 so total of 1684 calories. You don’t need dinner, maybe a bowl of soup

latetothefisting · 23/03/2025 22:06

montelbano · 23/03/2025 19:16

A scone at 5.30 pm counts as 'dinner'? A light tea, maybe. Do people really eat their dinner at 5.30 pm as correct time implies??

yes, many people eat their evening meal early
if they want to eat at the same time as their kids, if they go to bed early (if you're in bed by 9 it's not great to be eating at 8), if they are doing intermittent fasting or "window" eating, if they work shifts, or if that's just the time they're hungry!

I eat later now but growing up we always ate between 5-5.30. If you have lunch at 12 it's probably healthier to eat a main meal at 5.30 rather than have a large snack to 'tide you over' until 7.30.

is it THAT remarkable and unusual that you need 3 question marks to convey your shock?

A scone does not equal a meal. Even if it was served with cream and jam.

DH doesn't have to eat dinner if he doesn't want it. But he can't dictate what others eat.

It does, for some people. It would top me wanting another meal after it.
