That we still need dinner

Littlebittiredoflife · 23/03/2025 18:54

DH is saying we don't need dinner tonight as we've already had three meals. Our "meals" were 2 or 3 American pancakes for breakfast with fruit and a drizzle of syrup, smoked salmon and cream cheese bagel with crisps, cucumber and tomato for lunch and a scone with jam and cream. Admittedly lunch was around 2:30pm and scone around 5:30pm.

I know it's not the healthiest day and we could do with a bit more veg for sure but aibu to think that we do all need an evening meal still? DH is often saying do we actually need dinner if we end up eating lunch late. I'm not the best judge of food as I overeat but I'm sure DC will still need feeding this evening

A bagel isn't a large lunch, and a cream scone isn't a substitute for dinner. If your DH doesn't want anything more to eat, happy days. You don't need his say-so to make yourself or your DC another meal.

A smoked salmon bagel is hardly "a very large" lunch

Ok we’ll agree to disagree, I find bagels and scones very heavy and they fill me up.

I agree with DH. Sounds like you’ve had enough food at the correct time of day. There’s no point eating more just because you haven’t eaten something adequately badged as dinner.

Bagels etc was the large late lunch, the scone was at 5:30

A bagel isn't a large lunch either though?

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 23/03/2025 19:11

😬 I would serve an easy but full meal after this

Maybe a pasta bake?

I am on a diet though so 😄😄, maybe some sandwiches, something light? x

ShillyShallySherbet · 23/03/2025 19:02

I wouldn’t be hungry to eat an evening meal if I had a cream tea at 5:30 and that sounds like a very large and late lunch. So I’m with your DH.

A bagel with crisps is a large lunch? It's a round sandwich

Depends if you're hungry surely? If you are, then eat. If he's full he doesn't need to.

What?!! single bagel with some crisps, tomatoes and cucumber sticks is a large lunch?!!

I wouldn’t be super hungry for dinner if I had a cream tea at 5.30pm but I would might want a snack in the evening. A cream tea isn’t dinner. I would want DC to have at least something light and healthy for dinner eg veggie soup, cheese salad, omelette and salad, pasta pesto with broccoli and peas.

NoraLuka · 23/03/2025 19:14

Just the one scone each is just a snack, assuming they’re not extra large or something! I would def make a meal after that, if anyone isn’t hungry they don’t have to eat it.

BobbyBiscuits · 23/03/2025 19:14

The scone isn't a meal! It's a treat/large snack.

So something like a couple fish fingers and peas for dinner? Beans on toast? Or just have hummus and crackers and carrot sticks or something. You shouldn't have to cook a full meal from scratch but something easy at about 7pm or later, depending on kids bedtime?

Pickingmyselfup · 23/03/2025 19:14

If you're hungry then eat and eat whatever you want/need.

I eat more than my husband because I do way more exercise than he does. Last year we went out for dinner, he had 2 courses and was fine, I had 3 and was still hungry after!!

Easterbunnygettingsorted · 23/03/2025 19:15

You don't need his permission to have more food. Make something for everyone but him.

Scone at a cafe would be at least 250 calories of scone, 100 of butter, 80 of jam and goodness knows what of cream. 150? 580cals is plenty unless you are trying to gain weight.

InfoSecInTheCity · 23/03/2025 19:16

Youve not had 3 meals, you’ve had 2 and a snack. You might not be hungry enough for a full roast, but a normal sized dinner would be appropriate.

A scone at 5.30 pm counts as 'dinner'? A light tea, maybe. Do people really eat their dinner at 5.30 pm as correct time implies??

2025willbemytime · 23/03/2025 19:17

He can say HE doesn't need anymore food but he doesn't get to dictate to anyone else. Bloody hell.

AlertCat · 23/03/2025 19:17

As a kid my mum would say this sort of thing if we’d had Sunday dinner at lunchtime, but by teatime I was always ready for another meal! Soup and cheese on toast might be good as a supper, and could add some veg into the day. Even now I would still need something else or I’d be hungry at bedtime.

TwentyTwentyFive · 23/03/2025 19:20

Cumberlandsausagedog · 23/03/2025 19:15

You can list the calories to make it seem excessive and to add to your faux shocked confusion but it's still just a cream tea and after a light lunch the vast majority of people would still want something to eat, particularly children. Just because it has a certain amount of calories doesn't make it filling.

Jellycatspyjamas · 23/03/2025 19:20

Yeah I’d need dinner - two meals and a snack doesn’t negate an evening meal. You don’t need permission to have a meal.

Littlebittiredoflife · 23/03/2025 19:22

Just to clarify although he said that he would never stop us having a meal and would even be the one to cook it even if he wasn't hungry so there is no worries about his dictating it. He just questions it often and today I had examples of the food.

I have no idea how many calories are in anything tbh but would assume a scone is similar to a couple of slices of toast with butter and jam and I often have that as a snack after work. 5.30 would be about 3 hours before the evening meal so I would definitely eat something else then, not a large meal though.

ChicaWowWow · 23/03/2025 19:22

Dear me, eat what the fuck you want, when you want. If he doesn't want a meal, fine. Doesn't mean you can't have one.

Teaandtoastserveddaily · 23/03/2025 19:23

Obvs you still need supper. The scone was like pudding, you just had it first!

I'd probably have some cheese on toast or a sandwich.

OrangeKettle · 23/03/2025 19:24

I swear I should be featuring on “My 600lb Life” or whatever it’s called, based on what I eat and how it compares to Mumsnet 😂

JustMyView13 · 23/03/2025 19:25

Forget the veg (carbs), you’ve had hardly any protein.
