Neighbour’s kid picked my daffodils

Lucylooloo2 · 21/03/2025 22:48

Just that really, had lots of notifications of movement on the doorbell camera and lo and behold a kid (8ish years old) from a few houses down with a bunch of daffodils in her hand.

Checked mine in my front garden when I got home and Every. Single. One. has been taken.

I’m just really sad tbh. Know there are much bigger problems in the world but they were a little spark of joy for me 😕

I'm not sure why people think anything needs to be explained to the child as if she simply made an error.

She deliberately left the flowers to enjoy in her own garden and stole every one of her neighbour's daffodils so she could enjoy those inside also. Leaving her neighbour with none.

I'd wonder about how concerned the mother will be.

aliceinawonderland · 22/03/2025 11:26

So people who think it’s ok… would they mind if a pint of milk or parcels were stolen from their doorstep? What if the parcel is just a book worth £1 from abebooks. Does that make it ok?

MasterBeth · 22/03/2025 11:28

AffableApple · 21/03/2025 22:57

This.

(Also Mother's Day is over a week away, so unlikely to be for that for those suggesting so.)

The 8 year old is presumably not factoring that in. They're 8!

TwoRobins · 22/03/2025 11:30

Lucylooloo2 · 21/03/2025 22:57

Thanks all - I don’t feel so silly about feeling so sad about it now.

I am also slight annoyed about it because they literally have their own daffodils in their front garden but they’ve been unharmed!

That's just the icing on the cake. Honestly, OP, I would speak to her mum - before the tulips disappear!

TimeForATerf · 22/03/2025 11:34

I would be annoyed and agree 8 is far too old to be coming into people's gardens and pinching their flowers.

On a lighter note, without boundaries who knows where this lack of respect for other people's bulbs will end up:

no. OP needs to go to the parents, explain what has happened. Ask if they would prefer her dig up their daffs to put in her garden to replace them, or if they are going to pony up so OP can get replacements.

All you MNetters who think 8 year olds are cute for stealing: Do your jobs. Tell your feral children not to steal. FGS what on earth is wrong with you?

This. Some of the responses on here are batshit. 8 is plenty old enough to know you don't go into other people's gardens uninvited, let alone steal flowers.

Seems like so many people let their kids do absolutely whatever they want with so little teaching of right from wrong. Depressing.

Yep. It's the way the child knew not to pick mummy's flowers, but the neighbour's were fair game!

I would buy some daffodil bulbs and take them to the little girl in a gift bag with some earth and a little gardening set. Explain how she can plant them in her own garden and eventually pick them herself-as they belong to her. And you then keep yours as you also grew them in your own garden.
Depends on how well you know the family of course?

This is the most unhinged, stupid thing I have read all day. Maybe OP should also buy her some
chocolate as a treat. Jesus f Christ.

Hwi · 22/03/2025 11:40

ClaredeBear · 22/03/2025 11:10

Aww, that’s so sad for you, I know how that feels. I wonder if you could give them a couple of bulbs so that they can grow some next year?

Aww, and when your neighbours' kids steal your earrings from the trinket dish (when unfortunately the window was left open) and the little Borstal shites got in, maybe you can give them your pendant as well, so next year they will have a set? Are you seriously proposing to reward ASBO behaviour? I hope this is acing in in terms of sarcasm on your part and I am just taking everything at face value again?

Elboob · 22/03/2025 11:42

Azulejo9 · 21/03/2025 23:23

Aw seriously, these are as cheap as chips, just think about the joy they may have brought her to bring them home to her Mum. Kids at 8yrs old are just that.. kids’

stop sweating about the small things

What rubbish. If they are £1 buy them!!

This kind of shit attitude is ruining the country.
Someone grew those in their own garden and now they are GONE and won't grow back for a whole year.
Everyone walking past and the gardener could have enjoyed them for a few weeks. But now noone can. It's not sweet.

treesandsun · 22/03/2025 11:42

Very annoying - I would tell the neighbour to explain to her daughter not to do it. I remember as a kid picking the heads off roses from our garden and next door's to make 'perfume' and getting bollocked for it. I didn't do it maliciously but was definitely old enough to know not to do it.

Stealing is not super sweet.

@Mamofboys5972

do you think it would be super sweet if the kids also stole some sweets from the shop for Mother’s Day, to go with the flowers?

@abracadabra1980

no, you wouldn’t, Hun.

Vannymcvan · 22/03/2025 11:45

I'm stunned that people think this is OK. How the hell have you raised your kids? It's stealing. I'd be absolutely fuming if some strange kid came into my garden and nicked my flowers.

Mamofboys5972 · 22/03/2025 11:49

Oh maybe I have a totally different view to everyone else. I wouldn't mind kids picking flowers 🤷‍♀️ each to their own

BCSurvivor · 22/03/2025 11:49

OP, I would be upset too.
A long time ago I grew cherry tomatoes in my front garden border as I'd run out of space in the veggie patch.
One afternoon I heard children outside laughing, went to the window and saw that they'd picked most of my cherry tomatoes and had lobbed them at the house wall on the opposite side of the road!!!
I was livid.

OVienna · 22/03/2025 11:49

Pallisers · 21/03/2025 22:54

if you know which neighbour it is I would go to them and say "your dd picked my daffodils today - can't do anything about it now and I know children will be children but I would appreciate if you could explain to her that the daffodils in my garden - just like the wildflowers in the wild - are not to be picked.

There is nothing super sweet about a child picking flowers from someone else's garden. That little spark of joy - gone because the kid picked them.

Pinepeak2434 · 22/03/2025 11:50

I remember when my friend and I were children and picked our neighbour’s roses to make rose perfume. The next time we tried it she came out and told us to not pick them, that they were for everyone to enjoy - she was also really sweet about it when we told her why we picked them, but I never picked someone else’s flowers again and have always told my children not to. I guess I didn’t know any better at the time.

Topsyturvy78 · 22/03/2025 11:51

Mamofboys5972 · 21/03/2025 22:51

I also love having fresh flowers in the garden, especially daffodils. However, that little spark of joy they bring you? They clearly also spark that in others 🥰 maybe that little girl picked them for her mam for mothers day! Super sweet x

You can buy a bunch for a £1-£2. Nobody has the right to go into somebody's garden and help themselves to flowers that don't belong to them. Our local big park has lot's of daffodils every year. They are for everyone to enjoy. But every year people have to be reminded not to pick them.

@Catsbreakfast

it does make sense. I’m saying that the poster who said she’d make up a gift for the kid with bulbs etc wouldn’t do that. And she wouldn’t unless she was living in an Enid Blyton novel. It feels twee and disingenuous and invalidating of OP’s very natural and normal feelings of annoyance. Hope that clarifies. No booze has been imbibed here Hun (not yet anyway!)

You think it’s fine for kids to steal. Most of us don’t. That’s the difference.

Growlybear83 · 22/03/2025 11:55

The more I think about this the more I’m surprised that the child’s mother hasn’t been found to apologise. Surely she would have questioned where an eight year old had obtained a bunch of daffodils from and would then have realised that a serious apology was owed to the OP? An eight year old would hardly be able to have trotted off to Tesco to buy them. Or maybe the child is a liar on top of everything else.

JudgeJ · 22/03/2025 11:59

LoremIpsumCici · 21/03/2025 22:49

They will grow back next year, so a minor harm.

So theft is OK in your tiny world!
I would go and tell the 'parents' that they had been sprayed with a powerful spray to kill bugs in them, the effects will not show for 48 hours. Give them something to worry about.
