Freaking out about implant

Bluebeachtree · 21/03/2025 19:44

I thought I’d made an appointment today to have a coil fitted at the sexual health clinic (GP doesn’t offer this anymore in my area), but it was actually a booking for implant clinic instead.

So I went ahead with the implant fitting (Nexplanon)…and now I’m freaking out about horror stories of 6 month long periods!! I’ve always had a very predictable 28-day cycle, 3 days bleeding. The nurse at the clinic said it could lead to irregular bleeding and was unpredictable.

Please can anyone reassure me that it wasn’t an awful decision? I’m annoyed I didn’t just wait another few weeks to get the coil.

I’m mid 40’s and due to start HRT shortly. Many thanks 🙏

I've 33 - I've been on the implant for maybe 10 years, bar a break during which I got pregnant with dd

Back on it now, for almost 6 years, just had my 3rd one put in

I don't get periods - maybe the occasional bit of spotting but that's it. In fact, when my periods start up, I know it's time to get it replaced 😭

Hope that's the case for you ❤️

Edit - not sure how hrt affects it

I've had it before, I just had periods like normal. All my friends that have had it had no periods at all

I’m mid 40’s and on my third implant, periods are irregular but definitely not a horror story. It’s more a case of 1 every 3-4 cycles and they last around 5 days.

First implant was amazing basically no periods for 3 years. 2nd implant bloody nightmare periods really irregular but not continuous as in wouldnt stop but would bleed a few times a month for a few days, and my hair fell out and I ended up reacting really badly in the sun and came out in a painful rash! Was utterly bizarre. (The rash wasn’t fully linked but suggested it could be a cause) That came out early than 3 years. They had no idea why I reacted differently wasn’t a gap or anything between them. I would try it again though as the first time was amazing

It sounds like it varies massively. I have had nexplanon/implant for 18 years. More than half of those years I have had awful irregular bleeding. Sometimes I wouldn't bleed for a month -6 weeks but then I'd have nearly 2 months bleeding medium, heavy, some spotting. I bled more than i didn't. I should have got it out earlier!
I got the hormonal coil last month and I've not bled once, as it is in your cervix it is more likely to stop bleeding, so happy with it.

I bled continuously for 9m had to take the pill ontop to stop it till gave up and removed

Thanks for sharing your experiences. It varies so much!! I’ll give it a few months and see

Be just had my 5th implant put in (15 years of having them) and have not had any periods since having the implant and it’s been the best contraceptive for me (better than the pill / depo injection) I’ve never had any side effects in those 15 years - but everyone is different

TwirlyPineapple · 22/03/2025 19:13

I’ve had implants on and off for about 15 years and have never had irregular periods on it. I think when I had one inserted I had a continual bleed for about a month, but other than that I never have any periods at all. I keep using this method mainly because of the lack of periods.

WeeBenny · 22/03/2025 19:27

I've had the implant for almost 6 years now it's been far better than the pill. I've not bled at all and no side affects either

NeverEverOhNo · 22/03/2025 19:37

Love mine. A couple of months to settle. Then no periods for 3 years. When I start spotting, that's when I know it's time to change the implant.
