Clipped someone’s wing mirror ?

Hey guys I am just after some advice. I have reported this to 101 online by the way, I am a new driver ( passed in November ) basically I pulled in to give way to a coach as the road had cars on my side. When I pulled out to continue down the road I heard my wing mirror bang in ( was going around 5mph probably ) I couldn’t stop so I continued and went to my house around the corner and dropped my daughter off and went to get pen and paper. I wrote a note to leave on the persons windscreen but I couldn’t figure out which car it was? I checked all cars mirrors for damage and debris and there was nothing on any of them so I couldn’t identify which car it was, I stated on the note my number and if there was any damage I would pay for that of course , has this happened to anyone and what was the outcome? I’m seeing online about points on a license which I really don’t want. It was a clearence mistake on my behalf and I take full responsibility I am just worried now, I did go back and try and resolve it but couldn’t identify the car so I reported it to 101 just in case the other person has reported it, any advice will be very appreciated.

thanks

Where did you leave the note if you couldn't identify the car?

You're overreacting hugely. You examined all the wing mirrors and there was no damage. You're not going to get points on your licence, just chill!

RachelleHulme · 19/03/2025 17:25

The mirrors are designed to fold back so it's possible there was no damage. If you couldnt find it it's unlikely to be damaged. Was your own mirror damaged? If not there is your answer.

I’ve clipped a wing mirror before and there was no damage.

How did you leave a note if you don't know which car you hit?

It's possible there was no damage, they're designed to fold rather than smash. Mine was hit at 30+ miles an hour once and it just banged in with a tiny chip in the plastic.

MementoMountain · 19/03/2025 17:47

I've done that. Similar situation with a line of parked cars, walked back along the whole row and couldn't see any damage, so I figured my wing mirror had absorbed the knock by folding in. I reported it to 101 too, just in case anyone reported a scrape. No outcome, no follow up. Sounds like you've done what you can (but leave more room in future!)

Sorry guys I have wrote this wrong. Probs due to my anxiety sorry, I went home to get a pen and paper I literally live around the corner , I wrote the note and drove back there , I didn’t end up leaving a note as I couldn’t identify which car it was , so the note is still on my passenger seat😅

I’m going to go back later again this evening just in case that person drove off within the time frame of me going home but it was literally not long at all so I doubt it , thanks for the reply’s guys

It's fine iv done it a couple of times i just drove off as no obvious damage. Wing mirrors are designed like this at 5mph you won't have damaged it

lineeyesqueen212 · 19/03/2025 18:14

Hopefully @Differentstarts! My anxiety is awful haha

This will be fine, wing mirrors are designed to be "snapped" in as you say a clearance issue.

You won't get points, I doubt there's anything too notice, its just a learning opportunity. You'll be fine, try not to worry
