To buy more books than I read🙃

I am an avid reader and have been since a child but I have an annoying habit - I buy more books than I read. I know so many bookish people experience this but as soon as I’m interested in a book I will buy it and intend to read it but before I know I have brought another and another that I can’t keep up with. I’m a slow reader and yes, overconsumption at its finest - but I’ll get round to reading my mini library one day… right? Does anyone else relate?

You're not alone, the Japanese even have a word for it : tsundoko.

wildthingsinthenight · 17/03/2025 16:27

I relate.
Isn't it lovely? 😄

purpleme12 · 17/03/2025 16:28

Oh yes I relate. 🤣

thecatdidit · 17/03/2025 16:29

I have taken to visiting my mobile library rather than buying books, although I do still buy the odd book (usually second hand).
It's been a revelation! Xx

Bejinxed · 17/03/2025 16:30

I think of reading and buying books as two separate hobbies. It is good when they align but not necessary!

ByWildLimeCat · 17/03/2025 16:30

Oh my goodness, yes. I have recently however discovered book buying on Vinted so I feel a little less guilty.

JoyousEagle · 17/03/2025 16:31

Our house is full of books because DH and I are both like this. Occasionally I half heartedly try and introduce a “one in one out” rule but it never lasts that long. We’re moving house soon so I am going to go through them all with a firm “am I actually going to read this” attitude.

Love that theory. I'm using that line with my husband. Because yes OP, I can relate!! My "to read" pile never seems to go down.

Powderblue1 · 17/03/2025 16:33

I’m there with you. We’ve just built a library wall so now I have an excuse to buy more. I do always buy second hand though

waitingquietly · 17/03/2025 16:33

My first approach now is to look on our library app to see if I can reserve the book I want even if I need to wait for it

thisoldcity · 17/03/2025 16:33

I work in a charity bookshop and I've given my colleagues strict instructions not to sell anything to me. Unfortunately they think I'm joking...

scrivette · 17/03/2025 19:03

I didn’t realise there were people who didn’t do this! My house is full of books - it wouldn’t feel right if I didn’t have a big pile of books waiting to be read!

MuddlingThroughLife · 17/03/2025 19:08

I am also guilty of this and feel no shame.

I currently have 67 books on my Kindle waiting to be read and 156 on my Amazon wishlist.

I love reading and I read them in the order I buy them which mixes up the genres for me, though I mostly read thriller/horror/crime.

MuddlingThroughLife · 17/03/2025 19:48

Oh and just to add, I keep a spreadsheet for my books. It has 3 tabs "waiting to read", "read" and "wishlist".

I like to be organised and to keep track of what I've read/bought so I don't double up. Some may say OCD 😊

LittleGreenDragons · 17/03/2025 20:00

I can't afford to buy new and I'm "usually" quite good in charity shops but my goodness, don't let me near those community book swaps where you only have to pay a pound (or return a book - hah!).

I have several bookcases that I need to read, several boxes in the attic I need to re-read and a list of books recommended from here 😬

MadameBethune · 17/03/2025 20:12

Oh yes. Otherwise how could I have a range of books to choose from? I want to read what feels right in the moment, not out of duty.

madamehooch · 17/03/2025 23:39

I have more books to read than I have years left to read them plus a fully loaded Kindle and library card.

I tend not to buy many though. Fortunately (unfortunately) I'm a bookseller so publishers fund my habit for free.

I've had three major culls. It was proper Sophie's Choice.

They also make good insulation against that one drafty wall.......
