Any Pharmacists about? Question about antibiotic

Hi, I've finally been given a course of antibiotics for a long standing chest infection, Doxycycline 100mg, I've got to take two today and then one a day for seven days, however I didn't think to ask about interactions with Solpadeine Max, I've tried Googling but I'm getting mixed answers, AI chat says I shouldn't mix but others say it's ok as long as it's not at the same time, I didn't think to ask at the time because I (wrongly) assumed it would be ok.

Thanks in advance

https://bnf.nice.org.uk/interactions/doxycycline/

No interactions listed on BNF (kind of like a pharmacists bible) between solpadeine and doxycycline.

Edit - just looked at what solpadeine actually is - a mix of paracetamol/codeine and caffeine. Sorry should have realised that was just a brand (I'm clearly not a pharmacist!!) - codeine, paracetamol and caffeine are all fine to take alongside doxy. Technically there is an interaction listed between paracetamol and doxycycline as they both can cause liver damage - however it's very common to take them together and unless you have known severe liver damage/recent transplant I wouldn't be at all concerned.

Normally if prescribing electronically the software automatically checks for interactions and highlights them to the prescriber - some interactions aren't actually so concerning in short term use so doesn't always mean 'never prescribe together' when there is an interaction.

One of the main things with Doxy is that you shouldnt take it in pregnancy.

There are no interactions between Doxycycline and cocodamol according to BNF interaction checker 👍🏻

mindutopia · 10/03/2025 21:50

I’m not a pharmacist, but I do take a lot of antibiotics and a lot of painkillers. Solpadeine Max is just cocodamol basically. The drug-drug interaction with doxycycline seems to be with the paracetamol. I personally would take ibuprofen and codeine instead. There are no interactions with either of those.

Brilliant, thanks everyone!

I'm a pharmacist & our approved interaction guide Stockleys states no interaction between doxycycline & the ingredients in Solpadeine Max (or ibuprofen).
My advice would be to swallow the doxycycline whole after food with a full glass of water & sit upright for a good 10 minutes as they have a tendency to stick & can make you a bit nauseous (hence after food).
Also the advice on the label about avoiding the sun & sunbeds is really important- seen nasty rashes in the past.
Hope this helps 😀

Oh thank you Barneysmomma that's really useful to know about sitting upright after taking it...
