To think my partner (a painter) saying I couldn’t be his muse is…

…massively insulting, not to mention wanky! And that’s coming from me, a writer.

I know I sound like something out of an early 20th century novel here but the situation is this - my partner paints as a hobby. He’s getting back into it after a long period with it.

He commented he hasn’t had a muse in a long time. I said wtf, why wouldn’t I be your muse. He said as we’re partners he knows me too well and couldn’t be inspired by me that way. I said so I don’t inspire you? He started backtracking saying he’s really admired me so much in my career etc but it’s too late.

I might join a life drawing class as the model just to annoy him. 😉

A night on the sofa should encourage him to reengage his brain and mouth 🤭

I'm sure he just said it without thinking, op, but maybe he needs to try being more romantic in general? Dating and wooing doesn't end once you're married x

MistyF · 09/03/2025 18:11

I would be pissed too, but he probably meant nothing bad. I would take it he cosy-ed to you and he still loves you, but passion is gone. How is your sex life? Maybe you need reignite the spark by doing something together?

NotTheDebtDoctorWithTheHungryScalpel · 09/03/2025 18:11

My partner wouldn't be my muse either.

That doesn't mean I don't love him, familiarity doesn't inspire art in the same way (for me) that's all.

Sex life is great! We just came from a trip having sex multipltle times a day.

I have long flowing hair like those pre raphelite models. More fool him! 😂

@mumofoneAlonebutokay he tends to be accidentally romantic. And then not romantic at the times I ask!

Its not a very nice thing to say to your love, is it…

Has he seen you pick your teeth, clip your toenails, trip over a rock, or any one of the boring and mundane things that make us human ? If so then yeah your muse status ship has sailed off in the night.

Stanwyck · 09/03/2025 18:24

@saltinesandcoffeecups maybe trip over a rock and some other day to day things but I tend to avoid letting it all hang out!

it’s enough I suppose! He was saying he needs a muse, just as long as he doesn’t find one in a woman ten years younger or something…

I'd be telling him to pull his finger out in the romance department girl, it needs to be him taking the initiative to do so

He needs to treat you like his muse, that's his problem! He's not lacking a muse, he's just not respecting the one he has! You're not just the wife 💕

Stanwyck · 09/03/2025 18:42

@mumofoneAlonebutokay he actually treats me well day to day but it does make me feel like yesterday’s milk!

maybe I’ll go to Italy and find a buff Italian painter to make me his muse.

😄😄🙌 yanbu there at all!

Onlyonekenobe · 09/03/2025 18:51

I agree with him! Being someone's muse includes being mysterious and elusive. You're wanting him to find you inspiring as you make toast in your mismatched pajamas and greasy hair on a wet Sunday morning!

Ameliepoulainandthephotobooth · 09/03/2025 18:56

I’m also agreeing with him! You can’t force yourself to be artistically inspired by someone. You either are or you aren’t!

Although I’m sort of joking it worries me if he doesn’t find me an inspiring person as his partner!

I also agree with him! I don't think a muse is someone you view in a realistic, down-to-earth, warts and all way.

Familiarity breeds contempt.

Just start holding stuff back. It's worth the risk of you him thinking you're having an affair.

TwoRobins · 09/03/2025 23:08

Is he your writing muse, OP?

Er…well im a crime writer, so maybe not directly, but one of the nicer blokes is somewhat inspired by him.

I suppose it seems different to me, as painters muses are often lovers. I asked him if previous muses had been girlfriends and he admitted yes!
