Why (in my experience) do in laws favour their daughters children over their sons?

I have seen it time and time again. The only exception being my maternal Grandmother. I also have a MIL that just blatantly favours her daughters children over ours and it grinds my gears.

Please share your wisdom with me as mother to a boy and a girl I can't imagine ever feeling or treating their future children any differently in the slightest.

Out of interest does your dh have photos of his dm with the dgc in your house?

@Millymoonshine I have no photos on display in my house at all so no playing favourites!

My MIL does a lot for SIL and her children, she is pretty much the third parent. I'm sure she loves the feeling of being needed and having a say regarding how those children are raised. I'm happy that's working for them but it would be my nightmare having that sort of relationship with her myself. I understand the close mother/daughter/daughter's children bond can make some people jealous but I think if SIL didn't exist then my relationship with MIL would be more tense because she would want a bigger, more overbearing role in our lives.
