In Your Opinion

AIBU to think that saying "in your opinion" as a comeback on a messageboard is unnecessary and tedious.

Isn't everything that we post here in our opinion, by default?

In your opinion 👀

(sorry couldn't resist)

CostcoBuns · 06/03/2025 13:34

Of course not. I can post someone else's opinion, a fact, a piece of research, a reference, all kinds of things that are not my opinion.

Regretsmorethanafew · 06/03/2025 13:37

Well no, obviously. Some things are objective facts.

But it's more used when people (and there are many) can't seem to distinguish their own opinion from what just is. They see it one way, so thats the way they expect everyone to see it, or else they're wrong.
It's actually insane how many people show this rigid, fixed thinking, unable to distinguish their own opinions from inalienable facts.

Maitri108 · 06/03/2025 13:39

You usually say it when someone is talking as though what they're saying is a fact.

CandiedPrincess · 06/03/2025 13:44

Good god. It's just a saying.

I've just said on another thread, that "X is the best one" in my opinion", because it's not fact that X is the best one, it is just, purely in my opinion.

Yes i agree with that. Some people do seem to struggle with the difference between the two and it comes across in the way they post.

No, I have definitely posted things on here that have been factual rather than opinion.

Hasn't stopped people from arguing with me though 😆

JaneJeffer · 06/03/2025 13:49

Yes it's stupid

madaffodil · 06/03/2025 13:55

I might post that X might be the accepted view on a particular topic, but in my opinion I believe that perhaps it should really be Y. That is just affirming that other people are entitled to have their own opinion on the matter, but their opinions happen to differ from mine.

Nothing wrong with that, is there?

LBFseBrom · 06/03/2025 14:33

That should be the case but there are people who post as if what they say is undisputed fact so not a bad idea to state it is your opinion, which invites different opinions. Just my opinion of course :).

MasterBeth · 06/03/2025 15:03

To be clear, I'm not concerned about the phrase "In my opinion" but the phrase "In your opinion."

I think it's fine, though normally unnecessary, for people to say "In my opinion."

I can post "In my opinion, Elvis is the best singer ever".

But even if I just post "Elvis is the best singer ever", of course it's my opinion.

There is no need for anyone else to answer with "In your opinion."

And, actually, if I claim something as fact, either true like "Elvis died on the toilet" or false like "Elvis died from a gunshot", the right response is still not "In your opinion."

You're really confused. If I say Elvis is the best singer ever, and you're wrong if you think otherwise, because it's a fact....then it's ok for someone to point out it's only my opinion.

This isn't very complicated.

Well, yes, but that's not at all how people use the phrase.

It's more...

"Chocolate ice cream is the best ice cream."

"In your opinion."

Well, yeah, obviously that is a statement of opinion. You don't need to flag it up as such.

Comprehension skills are terrible on here. Fact not opinion.

This is a great example of where, in theory, someone could answer "in your opinion", but it would be unnecessary and tedious to do so.

You are being provocative and playful. That's fine. The correct conversational comeback is to engage with your argument.

So, either "Yes, you're right because..." or "No, you're wrong and here's why."

"In your opinion" is a nothing, pointless, dead-end response.

It's pretty much the online equivalent of that thing we used to do at school as young children where we said 'No, YOU'RE a poo times a thousand and million and no returns!' And stood there looking triumphant because we had won an argument. We were six.
