Would you be embarrassed if your walls were lime this?

I am massively. Dh thinks it’s not that bad and we’ll get round to painting them. I don’t actually feel comfortable in my own house anymore, so will get the paint and do it all myself

Have you just moved in?

Mushmemellow · 02/03/2025 17:06

I would get on and paint them- would drive me mad looking at them.

Donotgogentle · 02/03/2025 17:07

Is there damp which has caused the staining?

Toomanynachos · 02/03/2025 17:10

No, we painted them last, during covid
The black is from and open fire and lots of messy prints and some colouring from our young Dd

The black part? That’s the wall above the fire, it’s from the fire

No, I wouldn't be. But I would just paint them if it was bothering me.

Milodon · 02/03/2025 17:15

Are you burning damp wood? If it’s doing that to the walls you must be inhaling a lot of particulate too. Definitely repaint but I’d try to avoid that much smoke especially with young children.

FeministUnderTheCatriarchy · 02/03/2025 17:16

I wouldn't feel embarrassed if I wasn't able to paint them due to finances or disability... But if there wasn't a reason, yes I would be embarrassed.

I am a big believer in taking pride in our homes and looking after them. I also believe in doing things now, just in case.

You never know what is around the corner and if difficult or lean times come, you'll be grateful things aren't already in a state of needing repair. You are buying yourself time if you need it at some point.

WonderingWanda · 02/03/2025 17:17

To be honest a few of my walls look like this because of my cat and my kids. They all need painting and haven't been done since pre covid. Now I wonder how often people decorate? Clearly I am very lazy.

It’s an open fireplace, but we have a wood burner in there, it does that every year

No damp wood

Why have you left it to the point you "don't feel comfortable in your own home"? Women can paint too... Why wait for the man to do it? If it's bothering you, get some paint slapped on.

I’ve been waiting for Dh to do them, I’ve said i’ll start it, but he says he will, but never gets around to it. We can’t really afford to pay someone

It Wouldn’t bother me greatly. Decorating isn’t top of my list.
I don’t really understand the issue, if you don’t like it then paint it… DH doesn’t object to you painting it I presume?

That’s what i’m going to do. Women can paint too, but I have a job, child, dog etc to take care of and he said he’d do it

Op, we have two open fires and don't have black walls. Don't you have a fireplace and mantelpiece? Just get it painted. Quick and easy.

We've been nj this house, Victorian villa, 30 years and never paid anyone to decorate. It's really easy and satisfying. You just need good quality paint and basic materials.

It’s not my forte and not something I have time for. Not looking forward to it

A wood burner or open fire shouldn’t be causing that much black staining , is the hole actually big enough for the unit you have ? I’d be very concerned that you are setting any children up for a lifetime of lung problems . I have COPD and it’s purely down to second hand smoke and open fires when I was a child .

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 02/03/2025 17:38

I have open coal fires and log burners in fireplaces and have never had that staining in 20 years, something is wrong. What has your chimney sweep said about it?

It’s big enough, really worried now, I hope not 😢 I think it stained from when Dh opens the door to put the wood in, I then tried to clean it, which has probably made it more stained tbh
