I would probably choose to go for a weekend away somewhere (finances permitting!)

Nothing wrong with a meal out though. Presumably you were celebrating with people you love and you had a nice time? That’s the important thing.

AnneLovesGilbert · 02/03/2025 15:52

I had a newborn, think we walked up to the pub at one point for a drink. Had a small family get together a few days later but it was low key and a bit of a blur.

2025mustbebetter · 02/03/2025 15:53

I ran a very hilly half marathon and smashed my pb. It was the only way I could get time to myself tbh!

Other than that did fuck all!

Decapitatedsausage · 02/03/2025 15:54

Mine was in lockdown and I was relieved as it took all the pressure off me to “do” something. I’d probably go away if it was now though.

Happy Birthday!

Loveduppenguin · 02/03/2025 15:59

Happy birthday 🥳 mine is next Monday and I’m off to Paris for the weekend on Friday with my dd (11) my dm and my sil and dn (17). I can’t wait.

Marypoppinsisnosaint · 02/03/2025 16:00

Happy birthday op!

Mine was Friday and that's all I did. Meal with wider family, my nieces, nephews etc. It was lovely. I didn't want a big fuss and that was just right for me.

KIlliePieMyOhMy · 02/03/2025 16:01

Firstly Happy Birthday
It's the start of your year, you can do lots in your year of celebration.
Make plans, go for it.
Eat a lot of cake.

Berlinlover · 02/03/2025 16:02

Happy Birthday OP.

I went on a solo trip to Berlin for my 40th.

2chocolateoranges · 02/03/2025 16:02

I had a party for my 40th. Felt it was easier than a night out with dh, dinner out with family, night out with school friends and another with my best friends. So a party meant I got to see everyone in the same place at the same time.

My 50th is in a couple of years and I'm going for a fortnight in the sunshine with dh.

namechangeGOT · 02/03/2025 16:03

I went out for a meal with my family OP! I dislike parties, I dislike 'nights' out and we go away a lot anyway! I'll have a party if I get to 100!

LouH1981 · 02/03/2025 16:09

I was 40 during lockdown so not much at all! Although I did really appreciate the beautiful handmade cards my children and niece made for me.
Skip forward to last year and after having a period of maternity leave, redundancy and zero cash flow, DH paid for us all to go to a theme park for the day as my gift.
It was amazing sunshine and so lovely to see the children having fun and letting their hair down. Hands down, best birthday.
So maybe just think about what will bring you the most joy 💐💐
Happy Birthday! xxx

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 02/03/2025 16:11

Nothing. My marriage had broken up the year before, my parents came to babysit my five kids so I could go out for the night - but I had nobody to go out with, nowhere to go and nothing to do. I sat in with my parents and watched TV.

Zanatdy · 02/03/2025 16:12

Went to NYC with childhood friend. Not on the day itself (which was over xmas hols, just went for a meal on the day)

Isobel201 · 02/03/2025 16:14

I turn 40 at the end of the month, but me and my family are going on a cruise end of June, so we're saving money atm for that. So it won't be anything special, might go out for a meal somewhere.

hulahops88 · 02/03/2025 16:14

I am going to Malta in may as it too cold now, but that's more for mums 65th that's was in lockdown!

And going to arcades and being a kid with bestie! -

And think I planning to see a film with another friend!

Maybe I should jump out of a plane this year! To mark it properly!

Just been out of a dv relationship and a lot of mates didn't come, due to all the hassle from that! Ex p made a lot of threats!!

Mine is this later this year but I don’t really have a “group” to plan anything with. I also have a baby that’ll be 1 by then.

I’d like a little break away. But I’m fully expecting we won’t end up doing anything, just going to the local pub for a meal like we do for everything haha

EasterIssland · 02/03/2025 16:15

I signed the contract for my kitchen and the floor on my 40th. Run around like crazy so that I could have a bit of celebration too. I think a meal for your 40th is nice if you liked the place and the people you went with.

ComtesseDeSpair · 02/03/2025 16:16

Were you happy with your birthday meal? If so, that’s all that matters. There’s no “better” than what you wanted to do. If not, then start planing something for your 41st now - there’s nothing magical about 40 which you can’t choose to do at 41 or 44 or whenever else.

I’ve been to “big birthday” celebrations ranging from dinners to big gatherings in a pub function room to villa holidays abroad - my friends’ preferences and choices are as varied as they are.

Sinkintotheswamp · 02/03/2025 16:18

I had a day off work and went to the gym.
Spent the evening pitting my pesky non-sleeping child back to bed endless times. Still bitter my family didn't even see if I wanted a meal out or party tea.

On my 50th I went to the tip and did have a meal out.

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 02/03/2025 16:19

Happy birthday 🎂 🥳

mamnotmum · 02/03/2025 16:25

Mines coming up. I've booked a cruise. Want to be away and doing something memorable.

Hope you've had a nice day.

EmpressaurusKitty · 02/03/2025 16:33

Happy birthday & congratulations on getting out of the relationship!

My 40th was pretty crap but it was the day that I decided to get out of my bad relationship, which is probably the best gift I ever gave myself. My birthdays got progressively better after that & my 50th, on the bank of Lake Como with wine & gelato, was brilliant.

You’ve got a lot of great birthdays to come.

Yorkshiredolls · 02/03/2025 16:44

Happy Birthday!
Yanbu, you do what you feel like theres no obligation is there? Mines in a years time and i am already thinking about it and hoping to have a party, but I am outgoing and love to get together for parties. but I get that others don’t like the be centre of attention and its their idea of hell. Ill hopefully also go for a week away with my wider family later in the year, maybe a villa or something as we have never had a holiday as an extended family but always say we will, so a perfect excuse to actually do it

Ihopeyouhavent · 02/03/2025 16:45

My mum had our boys and we i spent my 40th on California and Vegas. I didnt want to be at home for it and would have despised a party!

Wonderwhyibother · 02/03/2025 16:49

Happy birthday!

For my 40th mum got me a cake from the village cafe/restaurant (i normally bake all the birthday cakes and wanted one that i hadnt made for a change) and we had a takeaway in the evening.
