Scratched eyeball

Posting here for traffic really as i dont know what to do, Thursday morning @ 4am I woke up and went to rub my eye, instead poked/scratched it with my middle finger instead, it did as you'd expect, hurt and watered and then seemed ok.

However since then whenever i rub my eyes or touch my eyes, it hurts and tonight has been especially bad, i had a cry earlier ( unrelated ) and since then it's really been playing me up. It's watering again, hurts again, I've took pictures and had a look in the mirror but can't see any redness or anything.

What should I do? Is it the rubbing : touching that's irritating it? I don't suppose there's an eye specialist here is there? Grin As google is telling me to go to A&E as it's been over 48 hours and a big flash from the phone hurts my eye.

Any ideas anyone please? Thank you in advance.

Just a little update, opticians said keep an eye if it gets worse go to primary eye doc.

This is my eye for those wondering.

Opticians said 'keep an eye' 😂🤔

@Canwehavesunshineplease i think this is what has happened to me. I’ve had a cornier erosion which has been confirmed by hostipal and opticians. However, the erosion is in the left eye but I can’t seem to open both eyes. This has been like this since Monday afternoon.
i’m so worried it won’t get any better and I won’t be able to open both eyes. Did you just sleep it off or lye in a dark room?

Goldfishgreen · 26/02/2025 16:59

I’ve done this a number of times. It usually stops hurting after 3-4 days. Yes it’s bad until then. No long term effects.

Trabbling · 26/02/2025 17:31

No advice, but I love the colour of your eyes! (Well, your eye... but I presume the other one is the same colour 😁)

@Princesspollyyy

No stop it because I didn't think of this and now I think they were having me on 😂

I had a scratched cornea about a year ago.

Booked an appointment online with Specsavers as it's my local optician and just wrote in the text box something like "help I've scratched my eye".

They were really really good, very thorough, and the optician managed to pick a tiny wooden splinter that had escaped down the back of my eye out!

Canwehavesunshineplease · 26/02/2025 18:36

@Coco123456 It was quite a few years ago now so it’s difficult to remember but Im pretty sure I struggled to sleep that first night straight after it was scratched so I’m wondering if actually closing my eyes initially was worse but then it may have been as I was in pain but when I went to the pharmacy being out the sunshine/bright light was definitely an issue. The hospital gave me something either drops or ointment and I think this must’ve helped as I made a swift recovery. Think having my eyes shut or open was fine soon after but it was just sore for a while. I don’t know what to say about your scenario, did the hospital give you anything? Maybe your scratch (I’m guessing it was scratched) is deeper so will just take longer to heal? I wouldn’t panic, sounds like the hospital and opticians weren’t too concerned?

MadKittenWoman · 26/02/2025 18:46

Go to your local Specsavers or similar and get a full check. I did something similar with a plant support stick and was able to be reassured and recommended appropriate eyedrops to help.

Yep, lay in a dark room for several days. I didn’t particularly need to sleep, but I couldn’t do much else. Audiobooks are your friend.

I regularly get small scratches on my eyes. I'd recommend hypromellose eye drops (also known as artificial tears) to help keep the eye clean, move to Chloramphenicol drops (trade name Optrex Infected Eyes) if it gets red, itchy or sticky with yellow goo. Keeping it closed also helps, either with a patch or I tend to use a short piece of microporous tape from eyelid to cheek! 24 - 48 hours and it'll be fixed.

Talkabtit101 · 27/02/2025 00:31

Will call Specsavers in the morning, ended up going to sleep early tonight to try and sleep it off, woke up and it's still as bad if not worse, will give them a call, never known anything like it and i too, birthed a child with a three degree tear. And I'd rather do that again over this.

This is a pic of before all this and eye now. I do feel like you can actually see the scratch.
