CSA images now being sent to users via private messages

I know there is a thread about this in chat but I feel like this needs to be shouted about until all users are aware, and Aibu gets the most traction. MNHQ have apologised in one post on a thread in site stuff but I’m not sure that’s enough anymore given how frequently this has happened recently

Thanks for the heads up. What is the protocol if you receive image? Straight to police? Posting on thread is one thing but only so much we can do, thats in mumsnets hands but direct message through SM shouldn't we be reporting to police immediately?

ReadingRubbish · 22/02/2025 12:33

I have all PMs blocked. Much safer that way

noblegiraffe · 22/02/2025 12:38

As I said on the other thread, it's worth being extremely wary of clicking on any link posted on MN, whether on threads or in PMs. Clearly the site is being targeted.

MoiraSuppose · 22/02/2025 12:40

Thank you for this, I know about the other two incidents but not this one.

I never knew this was an option. I have now done this now! Thank you

Thanks for highlighting this @Lanawashington

PP need to know

Mrsbloggz · 22/02/2025 12:50

Jesus wept😱
I just looked at my private messaging thing and it says currently disabled.
I have no idea if I did this myself or if it's now like that for everyone because of the terrible things that are happening😬🤷🏻‍♀️😱

Fitzcarraldo353 · 22/02/2025 12:51

I similarly knew about the previous incidents but not this one. I really fucking hope the police are taking this active targeting seriously.

I just checked and mine was definitely on 5 minutes ago and now it's not so they've disabled it for everyone.

RainSpainPlane · 22/02/2025 12:55

It's clear MN is being targeted. There are groups out there who would enjoy seeing a mass exodus of users. I hope the police manage to catch the pathetic little fuckers doing this.

JohnSt1 · 22/02/2025 12:55

I have PMs disabled. What sort of sick fuck sends this filth to people?

Edit: It was probably done by MHNQ. At least I don't remember setting it up.

PandoraSox · 22/02/2025 12:56

I think it is probably best not to use the site late at night/early morning now.

I really hope those responsible for this are caught and prosecuted.

Probably. I'm a member of several forums and never heard of anything like this happening.

Yeah I've been on various different forums for decades and never known of a problem like this.

Floatlikeafeather2 · 22/02/2025 13:05

I'm assuming Mumsnet have disabled it for everyone. Mine is and it's the first time I've even clicked on the icon, let alone received a message on it.

I agree, I normally go on about 2 am after finishing work and was so lucky to have missed it both times but now I just don't go on at all at that time because I don't want to risk it.

Lanawashington · 22/02/2025 13:17

They’ve just posted on the thread named ‘urgent’ in site stuff to say that they’ve disabled them for everyone for now

People can hide behind VPNs and think they are ''immune to prosecution'' as they can't be traced.

CSA is illegal, and it just shows where their heads are at, favouring such abusive grotesque images.

NotTheDebtDoctorWithTheHungryScalpel · 22/02/2025 13:27

Does anyone know if there's a way to turn the PM function off please?

I would rather not take the risk when it does get turned back on again.

Go to settings and then 'talk settings'

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 22/02/2025 13:33

what the actual fuck is going on? Incels and other angry men targeting a site of predominantly women and where women are told they don't have to put up with absolutely shitty and revolting behaviour from men?

Thelnebriati · 22/02/2025 13:33

Mumsnet have turned it off for everyone.
