To regret getting my fingers tattooed?

Last year, on a bit of a whim, I had my fingers tattooed.

A single letter on each of my eight fingers, between the first and second knuckle. The letters are an acronym for an obscure song lyric which holds personal significance. It's such a niche reference that even a fan of the band wouldn't get it. So essentially eight random letters.

I have a lot of tattoos, but this is the first 'visible' one.

Last week a few people struck up a conversation about them on the train to work. It's the first time its happened since I got them done and - strangely - it made me feel a bit self conscious. They weren't mean/judgemental, but it brought to my attention that people very much notice them and potentially make snap judgements about me based on them.

AIBU to regret having them done?

Just to follow on: They will not affect my current or future employment.

I have very visible hand tattoos. I don't care what people think.

Not unreasonable to feel how ever you feel. I'd just try and own it though, it's something that is meaningful to you so who cares what other people think. No going back unless you wanted to try laser removal anyways!

Yanbu to regret we all regret things. Don't make it completely about the regret though. Work out what you wish to learn from the regret?
Do you not want visible tatoos?.
Do you not want tattoos that are obscure for others?
Do you not want anymore at all?

Then learn from it and move on with the knowledge you learned something about yourself

I don't think regret can be reasonable or unreasonable, can it? I suppose, at a push, one could say you could have anticipated comments because you know what it's like having tattoos and you're in the world of tattoos so to speak. But that doesn't really mean anything. You chose them, you have them, that's it.

Yanbu for your feelings, but I hope you love the tattoos again soon. No one worth knowing will judge you and it's more interesting to chat to strangers about than the weather.

You're not being unreasonable to regret having them done, I think a lot of people regret lots of appearance altering things they do!

Tbh I would make a snap judgement about someone with finger tattoos as the only visible tattoos - weirdly if they were fully tatted I would probably notice less, but I think if they are the only visible ones and its finger tats I'd be like "whoa they jumped into the deep end". Unless it's the words "kill" or "die" or something similar though, I probably wouldn't be avoiding the person 😂 I'd be more curious about what made them decide to do for it / what it meant. Unless I knew them I'd keep that to myself though!

If you truly regret them, there's always options - laser? Double down and get extra letters on the other bits of your fingers?

This is a great reply, thank you 🙂

I don't regret them all said and done - think I just had a bit of a wobble!

I'm going to get the four PlayStation button symbols on the lower fingers of one hand, because I'm a nerd, and will figure out something for the other to balance them out :-)

I have visible tattoos and nobody ever asks me about them. I do get some compliments though. My friend got a tattoo with writing and every single day someone asks her about it. So I will never get anything with letters or anything which can invite "what does this mean" question. So it's not really about the tattoo or placement, it's about the subject. You had a first taste of what it's going to be like and I am not surprised you feel the way you feel.

Dont have regrets op.
2 choices in my world regret it for the rest of your life or own it and work with it.
