I bought some salmon and it was use by yesterday. I was going to throw it out and told my DP but he said he wasn't bothered and that it would be fine and he cooked and ate it. Will he be ok?

No. Yes. Maybe. Probably 😂

ExtraOnions · 12/02/2025 23:31

Yes it will be fine

dizzydizzydizzy · 12/02/2025 23:32

DM who is in her 80s ate salmon dated the previous day and survived with no ill effects

murasaki · 12/02/2025 23:32

I would. if it smelled ok.

RIPVPROG · 12/02/2025 23:32

You would smell and taste if it was off

KrisAkabusi · 12/02/2025 23:32

Yes, absolutely.

alibongo5 · 12/02/2025 23:32

Almost certainly. It is not a finite science and they will err on the side of caution. A few hours won't matter.

Bournetilly · 12/02/2025 23:33

Yes I would eat it.

ChonkyRabbit · 12/02/2025 23:34

Food poisoning bacteria does NOT alter the appearance or smell of the food. If food looks or smells off it is probably not safe to eat, because it is likely to have poisoning bacteria as well as the harmless bacteria that smells, but food which smells and looks perfectly fine is NOT necessarily safe to eat.

I don't know why I'm bothering because there will be 100 more comments repeating the incorrect information but oh well.

Anyway, one day past the use-by date is probably okay, if it's been stored at the correct temperature. Probably.

Fidgety31 · 12/02/2025 23:35

Yes I ate some that was six days past its use buy date . But I smelt it and it was fine and so was I ! Use your nose - more reliable than a date stamped on a packet .

Stop applying common sense! We need more panic and unnecessary drama please!

biggreenapple24 · 12/02/2025 23:36

Absolutely fine! It wouldn't even cross my mind that it wouldn't be fine.

ThinWomansBrain · 12/02/2025 23:38

I'd have eaten it.
I wouldn't have "ate" it.

Teado · 12/02/2025 23:40

He’ll be fine!

Crikeyalmighty · 13/02/2025 00:03

I've just eaten a Waitrose yoghurt 2 hours ago that's 6 days past best before - didn't notice - tasted ok -

Me too. When did people stop being able to use past participles?

ErrolTheDragon · 13/02/2025 00:14

I wouldn't have eaten it, but that's because I was made very sick by some salmon about 4 decades ago. I couldn't eat it at all for years after and still not keen so the thought would put me off.

I'm not at all a fussy eater in general.

5foot5 · 13/02/2025 00:17

He'll be fine.

theduchessofspork · 13/02/2025 00:18

eaten it.

Yes, as long as it smelt ok it will be fine.
