Right hand side pain/ache

I randomly felt my right side and felt like there was a hard area. I went to the doctors and she said she couldn’t feel anything but muscle. At this point I had a little light pain and she said to come back in a couple of weeks if it hadn’t gone. I am going to go back next week if this persists.

It’s on my right side, below ribs, I guess it feels like a bruised feeling. I get more of a niggling pain higher up my ribs too. It’s not there all the time but a lot. I know only a doctor will know (and I’m going!) but has anyone had anything like this? Or know what it could be?

starting to worry now, it’s not getting worse but doesn’t seem to shift

I've had this for 6 years, in exactly the same spot. I had blood tests and urine test just in case at GP but NAD. Assumed muscular or rib tenderness, from being hunched over desk at work. Stretching helps. Constipation doesn't. I wonder if it's floating rib..

My husband had a similar pain. He has a history of cancer so they took his symptoms very seriously. He had blood tests and a CT scan and they found nothing wrong so it remains a mystery...

@Fencehedge thanks for replying, do you still have it? Could you feel anything? I definitely feel I can feel a hard area below the rib cage but the doctor couldn’t. I’m not in excruciating pain but I’m aware of it & it’s not great at night because I don’t like to sleep on that side. I will go back to the docs just so worried what it could be.

@crocheteveryday thank you. Does your husband still have it?

I still have it, some times worse than others. Having a feel about is silly as you have lots of organs around that area. Anything you feel could be anything unless you know what you're feeling. I've been meaning to get an osteopathy perspective because I would lilke to know if it's floating / slipping rib, and it's unpleasant.

Meagain24 · 12/02/2025 18:14

@Fencehedge You are right, I’ve stopped touching the area since the doctor said she couldn’t feel anything. It’s just constant discomfort that makes it hard to forget it. Thanks again for replying.

It comes and goes but it's definitely not as bad as it was. A few months ago he would visibly wince from the pain. I haven't seen him do that for a while now.

FadedRed · 13/02/2025 10:44

Could be your gall bladder, it’s situated upper right abdomen, beneath you ribs.
Does the pain come and go, or is it constant? Is it present after food, especially fats? Worth asking for blood tests to rule out inflammation and jaundice, an ultrasound or a CT scan for diagnosis. Buscopan might help, you can buy OTC.

Meagain24 · 13/02/2025 11:40

@FadedRed its been more constant the last couple of days but since I’ve started having it it has been on and off. Haven’t really noticed it getting worse with anything.

i ended up getting a doctors appointment this morning as it was so uncomfortable last night. Im going to get a blood test and have an ultrasound.

thanks for your help!

@Meagain24 Hi OP, I wondered whether you have found out what was the cause for your pain as I have exactly the same symptoms - persistent ache and discomfort on the right side of abdomen under the ribs for six weeks now. It radiates to the back as well. Ultrasound showed fatty liver but nothing else. I had my gallbladder removed many years ago.

Hopefully, you are better and free from your pain.

Meagain24 · 12/08/2025 16:55

Hey. No, I went for an ultrasound and everything was normal for me. Definitely a lot lot better but occasionally get a bit of discomfort under ribs on one side. No idea what it was!

@Meagain24 , thank you for replying. Great that there doesn’t seem to be anything seriously wrong. Puzzling though as from what I have managed to research many people have similar symptoms but no definite answer what causes them.
