16cm cyst - what to expect now?

Mamaofdos · 10/02/2025 12:09

A CT has confirmed I have a 16cm cyst that is currently displacing my colon and bowel.

Radiologist has recommended MRI.

I am trying to prepare myself on what’s to come and how long I have to wait.

Does anyone know waiting times of MRI in Scotland?
Do you think this will be classed as urgent?
Do you think they will be able to do this with key hole surgery?
How long is recovery time?
How soon would I get operated on?

Obviously you can see I am coping well with the unknown!!

What is the cyst attached to? Is it an ovary? I had a similar sized one, it was classed as urgent because they weren't sure if it was cancerous and for that reason they had to do open surgery rather than keyhole

Looking at my report it is not attached to anything. It’s in my abdomen.

They can’t 100% say it’s not cancerous.

Did you have to go for an MRI? Did you have to wait long on your surgery?

Yeah I went for an MRI, they still couldn't tell if it was cancerous or not. I think I waited about 5-6 weeks for surgery

Do they think it's near your spine? My aunt had one bottom of her spine that starts growing in the womb and they are usually not cancerous just a bundle on confused bone / tissue - so I hope your's is ok.

I had similar on my ovaries and had an MRI that fortunately showed it wasn’t cancerous and got surgery a few weeks later to take it out

Recovered well but took about a month off work to cover the operation and healing time, although I was up and about after about two weeks

For me though I managed to get this all done privately through my work so that did cut down any waiting time. I had to wait 5 days over a weekend for the MRI which was a difficult few days but I did get the it’s not cancer news on the same day as the MRI which was a relief

Good luck with it all!

Edited to add there were also blood tests done the day before my MRI and after my operation they still checked the cyst for any cancer as a second check and I got told about a week later that came back clear too

I went for CT privately last Monday but now have an Ultrasound today through NHS today. I don’t think that will be useful but doctor told me to go.

I have met with surgeon already last Monday and he now has my CT images etc. Hoping to hear back soon.

I have zero patience. Also really worried.

I can actually feel it with my hand, so not near spine. Just displacing colon and bowel which I’m thinking may cause a problem if it keeps growing…
