To apply for other jobs while at work?

If you’re working full-time but looking for a new job, do you apply during the workday? Like do most people do it on the sly during work hours (I wfh) or it is seen as unprofessional?

I know some people wait until evenings/weekends, but realistically, if you’re job-hunting while working full-time, how else do you fit it in?

AIBU to think it’s normal to job hunt while at work/wfh or should it be strictly outside of work hours?

Of course you shouldn’t be using time when being paid by your current employer to job hunt.
Save it for your lunch break, or other time when you are off the clock.

Fully agree.

WFH has addled people's brains and the amount of creative accounting I see happening with people's hours, where they say

  • I'll work six hours today and do a bit of job search, housework etc, but I'll "make it up" at the weekend (they never do)
  • I'll do stuff at home as I'm not busy and it's only time where people would have interrupted me when I'm in the office

etc etc...

And then these are the same people who are wondering why some positions aren't available in the UK job market in their roles, and why bosses are frustrated in some sectors with WFH

I’m sure some people do, but ultimately it’s gross misconduct - not just “unprofessional.” It’s also burning bridges to stop caring and allow your work to slide because you know you’re looking for other jobs and will hopefully be off soon - and not something that people in industries or at levels of seniority where word gets around can afford.

In the evenings dawn weekends, like you’ve said?

I wouldn’t do it on work time, no. I’m not sure there’s a way to dress that up that isn’t absolutely taking the piss.

I worked with a girl once who used the computer in the office to look for other jobs. She got caught and fully admitted it without a care in the world. Didn't go down well😂

Obviously you can’t do it on work hours while you are being paid by someone else. I mean, unless you want to get fired…

If you work full time, presumably you still have time in the evenings and weekends so I am not sure I quite understand your question of how to fit it in.

AyrnotAir · 07/02/2025 17:44

In the evenings or the weekend. The only time I applied within the work day was when it was for a role with the same employer and my supervisor at the time told me I could apply for it within the working day as she knew I was going for it.

No. I might browse for vacancies whilst on my lunch break. (On my personal phone, never on a works device)

Then I use my personal laptop to apply outside of my working hours.
