Things that are stupid that don’t need to be stupid…

I’m changing my name this month - my middle name is moving to be my first and I will have a new middle name. My deed poll needs to be witnessed… but my parents cannot be the witnesses. The people who gave me my original name and are actually very happy for me to change my name (in my dad’s words: “God, go for it, we stuffed it up the first time!”), cannot be my witnesses. They cannot be involved in changing a name that they originally chose for me, to a new name that they are happy with. I do get the legal aspect as well as the safeguarding aspect, but you know when something is just a bit stupid? My dad wanted to be a witness!!

Anyway, small beans, minor gripe. But what other stupid things are there that don’t need to be stupid? Hundreds I am sure! Join me in my minor grumble!

Booking a driving test. Has over the last ten? years becoming the most ridiculous, corrupt farce you can imagine.

You’d think you would just email the preferred test centre and if no dates available, put your name in a waiting list?

But no. You have to get up at 6am on a Monday and wait in a queue. Last Monday I entered the website at 3 seconds past six am and was 8000th in the queue. I waited half an hour and was then able to book one an hour’s drive away in July. Where our instructor won’t travel.

You then have to try and swap it to one in your area. But round us, none ever come up. There are multiple apps you can pay for that tell you when free tests come up. But it’s never in time to actually book one.

Im told instructors can get priority with booking and there are rumours of tests being sold for profit on social media.

It’s atrocious really. A real disservice to our younger generations. What should be a simple admin task is a monumental mess.

We’ve been trying to book one since last summer. We’ve had to sit the theory again as it timed out.

This one needs a government intervention

I heard driving testers get paid too little for it to be worthwhile now in a lot of areas. But I don’t get why they can’t keep a list of names so you can get a test fairly in a queue.

The driving test thing is mad, after Covid there was huge demand, system broke down and some people worked out they could game the system and sell slots at a profit. There appears now to be a huge black market in driving tests. I have no idea why government hasn’t moved to fix it, I’d imagine like everywhere else they’ve cut dvla to the bone and they don’t have capacity?
