Had surgery and now off sick - going out

I’ve had surgery to remove a lump in my breast. Thankfully it’s benign.

I have a sick note from the hospital for post surgery time to recover.

What are your thoughts on going out when I feel up to it?

I live and work in the same area so highly likely I’ll be seen by someone I work for/with or know from work. Likely my friend will encourage me to meet her next week for a coffee or a walk around.

I’m not thinking major things like holidays or concerts etc, just a walk, coffee, food shop, pet shop visit and maybe tea out at the pub.

Thanks.

That's fine, being signed off to recover means to do just that, recover.. it is not a house confinement note.
Sounds like a walk and a coffee and then some errands will be helpful in your recovery as you're building up to return to work.
Don't stress about it.

Exactly what previous poster said, it’s for you to recover both physically and mentally.

I wouldn't be doing a supermarket shop ... too much lifting after surgery. Walk, out fir coffee or lunch fine.

Thanks for the responses.

I wouldn’t do shop on my own, either after work with DH or go with my retired (but fit and able) parents.

i was off work once after a knee operation, was in local hospital grounds on crutches on my way for pysio under manager spotted me and shouted caught you going out while off work .. i was so angry i swore at them , you are allowed a visit out you will get depressed staying in

I’m signed off following an operation. I went out with a friend from work on the following Saturday, I’ve gone into town and had lunch and a walk round, gone out for tea and gone to a board game cafe, this week coming im getting a massage. The surgeon advised I walked daily anyway to help with recovery. I’m not in a position to be back at work, but I will go crazy staying in the house! Even being out for a few hours wipes me out, so struggling to see how I will cope with an 8hour day

ThinWomansBrain · 02/02/2025 12:23

it would be slightly mad to go from 24/7 bed rest straight back to full time work - why wouldn't you go out while recovering?

biscuitsandbooks · 02/02/2025 12:25

It's normally encouraged to go out while you're recovering from surgery or illness. You're fine.

Newnameshoos · 02/02/2025 12:27

I wouldn't worry about going out while you're convalescing. It's an awful myth that if you are signed off, you can't go out of the house.

I went with a friend to GP appointment when she was signed off after surgery. I'd been encouraging her to come away with me for a few days but she wasn't sure. When I asked the doctor she said 'that's a great idea, just what she needs'.
Go for it

Thanks everyone, I think it’s the age old expectation of if you’re well enough to be up and about you could be sat at your desk working - or - working from home even.
