Would you get your child a second hand bike?

We’ve always bought new and usually for birthdays or Christmas. Dd is in the in between stage of being a bit too big for her bike with stabilisers, but hasn’t learnt to ride one without. Her birthday isn’t until late summer, but she’s keen to get trying without stabilisers, I can’t really afford or justify buying a brand new, expensive bike for no reason.
I saw a great one for £30, little basket and bell, would you buy it?
I’m guessing she’ll outgrow that one in a year or two 😅

Why not?

Hollowvoice · 31/01/2025 19:34

Why wouldn't you?

RandomButtons · 31/01/2025 19:34

I think I’ve only bought them secondhand bikes so far. So many people get them and never use them.

Oneflewovermydogsbed · 31/01/2025 19:35

Absolutely,not sure why not.

AwakeNotThruChoice · 31/01/2025 19:35

Only ever bought 2nd hand.

HaroldLeftEye · 31/01/2025 19:35

My kids have only ever hand second hand ones.

Neolara · 31/01/2025 19:35

Yes.

Wishitsnows · 31/01/2025 19:36

Yes, absolutely

AffIt · 31/01/2025 19:36

Why wouldn't you?

If it makes you feel better, get a bike mechanic to give it a once-over, but realistically she's not in training for the Tour de France, is she?

WildCherryBlossom · 31/01/2025 19:37

Definitely! A decent bike lasts for ages and children grow quickly.

Unescorted · 31/01/2025 19:37

All of ours have been 2nd hand.

grafittiartist · 31/01/2025 19:38

Every bike my kids had was second hand I think!

taxguru · 31/01/2025 19:38

Yes we bought our DS a number of second hand bikes as he got older. They grow so quickly that buying a new one makes no sense as they'll have grown out of it within 12-18 months. There are lots of good quality second hand bikes for sale locally so plenty of choice. We sold ours every time we got a new second hand one and barely lost any money as they sold for more or less what we bought them for. It wasn't until he was around 12 or 13 that he got his first brand new bike which lasted him through his teenage years.

RealHousewivesOfTaunton · 31/01/2025 19:38

Yes, absolutely. I bought DS a second-hand bike last summer and just got it serviced to make sure it was safe. DD has DS' old bike too.

purplecorkheart · 31/01/2025 19:39

I would of course. Your child is not going to care if it is secondhand or not. Much better to buy second hand than seeing perfecty good bikes rusting and eventually going to landfill.

SoftPlaySaturdays · 31/01/2025 19:41

Yep, I did. The nice chap at Halford's gave it a free health check for us after he fitted some stabilisers, if that's something you'd be interested in.

SpecduckularlyQuackers · 31/01/2025 19:41

We're very keen cyclists and would absolutely rather get a decent quality second hand bike when they're growing so fast. We've always picked up Islabikes and Frog bikes second or even third hand then sold them on once outgrown.

NotMeNoNo · 31/01/2025 19:43

Absolutely, in fact I'm sad to say the only new one was the first balance bike. There are loads of good children's bikes in circulation and when they got older we could look for better brands like Trek more affordably.

llenais · 31/01/2025 19:44

We've always bought secondhand bikes. We can afford new but it seems a waste of money if they're in good condition.

Lindatowin · 31/01/2025 19:44

Mine had second hand for all but one bike I think and that included the ones they had for Christmas and birthdays

TheFlyingHorse · 31/01/2025 19:45

Absolutely we always bought Isla bikes or Frog bikes and they really hold their value second hand.

mambojambodothetango · 31/01/2025 19:46

All bikes we've ever bought are second hand

Mrburnshound · 31/01/2025 19:48

Yep, i spent £200 on a second hand bike before, sold it for only £30 less, much better to get a frog or isla used than a new rubbish one

MissAmbrosia · 31/01/2025 19:50

Of course - they grow out of them very quickly when small.

eurochick · 31/01/2025 19:52

Our daughter has a second (probably third) hand frog. When she out grows it I will sell it and buy the next size up second hand.
