I work in retail till 3pm I finish first in my team. When I am due to leave I go and find someone to cover the till so I can leave on time.
My colleague works till 5pm and never leaves on time because there is a huge queue even though there are 2 colleagues in till 6pm who she can go and get to cover.
Today she was moaning about how she never finishes on time and said I'm going to start doing what you do and just walk out at 5pm.
AIBU to think that the comment is bitchy, i don't just walk out and my shift has ended so I'm not getting paid anymore.

She is being a martyr. Just let her get on with it and continue leaving at the agreed time. If she is willing to stay late and unpaid more fool her!

It sounds like a passing comment rather than a bitchy one.

AppleKatie · 30/01/2025 19:29

I would smile and say, ‘oh! Why aren’t you doing that already? Of course ask someone to cover when it is the end of your shift’

refuse to take offence and everyone wins

Thepeopleversuswork · 30/01/2025 19:31

You’re overthinking. I think she is saying she wishes she was as assertive as you.

devastatedagain · 30/01/2025 19:32

It's not bitchy, it's factual

Spirallingdownwards · 30/01/2025 19:32

Well yes. That's what she should do.

And you should have perhaps said I don't see why you aren't already doing that?

Choccyscofffy · 30/01/2025 19:33

It’s not bitchy. Bitchy would have been telling you she is going to go AWOL at 3pm so that you can’t leave on time.

Why don’t you support your colleague and ask her to push for overtime payment for working past 5pm?

This doesn’t have to be about you unless you make it about you.

xyz111 · 30/01/2025 19:37

Yeah not bitchy. She saying she should do what you do. It's a compliment!

DreamW3aver · 30/01/2025 19:42

I don't think that's bitchy, surely the answer to her is to agree that's it's a good idea as she's only paid until 5

ballettap · 30/01/2025 20:11

I don't think it's bitchy. I agree she's probably just meaning she wishes she was as assertive as you have been. I've been that colleague who did far more than I should just because I didn't have the confidence to stand up for myself.

She could ask to be paid for the extra hour, but I can;t imagine that would happen as she's doing it as a personal choice (even though she might feel she isn't).

I would support her standing up for herself. Management are taking the piss, they'll know she's working over her time.
