I've seen that it's now really easy to go online and click "request a refund" on your student loan account.
My company acknowledged that they had me on the wrong repayment plan in the past and for years i was paying a smallish monthly amount when i shouldnt have been (back when I was doing very part time hours because my son was born). However my salary then increased to above the 25k threshold for repaying the loan (im not earning loads, still the basic tax bracket) and I'm worried that if I request a refund, it will bite me because they will realise I owe THEM money?
If i have underpaid, would they just add the repayment that i should have paid on to my loan balance, or would they make me pay it upfront? I'm really worried I'll put in a refund request hoping for £500 and get stung with a £2000 bill or something! If it's just readded to the balance then fuck it! It's a drop in the bloody ocean!
Please tell me your experiences! 🙏
YABU - Apply for the refund, any overpayment is just added back on to the account anyway.
YANBU - DONT apply for the refund, you'll have a big bill to pay potentially.
