It's like some kind of self-harm.

Every post I roll my eyes at the op and the replies.

I think I have the ick.

Do you go to the sub forums? Many are great. Like the books and TV forums

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 29/01/2025 12:07

I think if you're feeling like this it's time to take a break.

Me too op

I love it here. I’ve had excellent replies to my posts, especially the ones that are disagreeing with me. Thanks all.

But yeah, if it’s not for you, door’s that way. ➡️

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 29/01/2025 12:15

Often yes. I just have to remember to read the threads I find entertaining and take much of it with a pinch of salt.

YouDeserveBetterSoAskForIt · 29/01/2025 12:17

I stay away from AIBU when having a hard time in my personal life... But some of the other boards are lovely. I particularly enjoy Litter Tray.

Like anywhere, it is what you make of it.

It's changed a lot over the years but so has the world and it's reflected here.

If you mean AIBU then I hear you. I’m getting fed up of it. I think the novelty’s wearing off.
But I keep coming back. Low key addicted 😂

Its really only aibu, see a lot of nasty comments but the weight loss, TV, and other subforums are great and everyone very nice.

gallic · 29/01/2025 12:37

Agree the other forums are ok.

I'm totally addicted to scrolling active. It's a disease.

Ditto Instagram reels!

Urgh.

Should throw my phone in the river and get a Nokia

Me too, op. I recommend the book How to Break Up With Your Phone- helpful for stopping mindless miserable scrolling.

coxesorangepippin · 29/01/2025 12:44

Oh god I just love it

Byllis · 29/01/2025 12:44

Reminds me of being a child again and poking a tooth that was on its way out to make it hurt!

My bugbears are the mob mentality on anything justice-related, condescending put-downs, lack of logic and comprehension skills, posters who are determined to make an op feel as shit as possible, general lack of empathy… it goes on and on. And yet a thread with particularly unthinking and mean-spirited posts is precisely the one I’ll keep checking in on and getting indignant about, and I doubt I’m alone.

I sometimes imagine posting a thread about something going on in my life and all the uncharitable responses I’d undoubtedly receive, and then mentally beat myself up about it - think self-harm is about right.

I sometimes have to remind myself that it's OK to just walk away and take a break. That, plus hiding threads I find is a good way to avoid going back to them.

Devilgate · 29/01/2025 12:49

The Eagles said you can check out any time you like !!

heyhopotato · 29/01/2025 12:49

Nah that's what I love about it.

Also a lot of schadenfreude - I'm like thank god that's not my life.

Ballynatray · 29/01/2025 13:07

I think what perennially fascinates me is that so many people on here are just generally not like anyone I meet in my day to day life, and many of their underlying assumptions about the way the world works are just not things I ever encounter elsewhere.

I mean, things like thinking being a SAHM is a widely-envied position, a complete suspicion of male-female friendships, having 'friends' who are really just acquaintances socialised with, many of whom people don't appear to like much, being terribly houseproud and having a whole concept of 'visitor-ready', people who get into their pyjamas at 5.30 pm after work and never leave the house again, people with problems in communication to the point where there seems virtually no ground between 'people-pleasing, at the beck and call of people you don't like or respect' and 'total no contact'.

I have to accept this world exists, obviously, because Mn isn't some separate universe, but I don't see it in my own life, and those are fairly widespread across a fair few international moves with friends and acquaintances in many places and in class terms as I grew up poor and WC and now live a relatively prosperous life.

OpenFox · 29/01/2025 13:09

It's an addiction!

But then I read stuff and think WTAF?!?! Are these people for real?!?! And the amount of comments from people who are so narrow minded and thick who can't seem to see it from another point of view, even though people are trying to be helpful.

Eventually I realise I'm wasting my life reading this crap, it's worse that TikTok, so delete my account to break the addiction 😂

and then... I come back because I'm clearly just as stupid as some of the others on here! 😫

Normallynumb · 29/01/2025 13:33

I love it. I'm 60 now and My DS's are adults
I'm disabled and don't work so for me, it keeps me connected with every day life and I have learned a lot from many posts and share my experiences when relevant.
The vast majority of posters are kind, and interesting.

NoraLuka · 29/01/2025 13:35

I keep spending too much time on here. I know I’d be better off doing something else but it’s like junk food for the brain and I keep scrolling. I’m not like this with anything else, I can take or leave TikTok, Insta etc. Also I’ve had some good advice over the years and learned about lots of different stuff but I don’t think it’s enough to justify how much time I’ve wasted.

It’s 2.34 PM where I am, I’m going to stay off MN until this time tomorrow!
