Why is my replacement credit card taking so long to arrive?

I bank with Santander (since way back when it was Abbey National).
I’ve only ever had to replace a lost card once (this time). I rang them last Monday (20th January) to let them know I'd lost it and they said they'd send me out a replacement. I'm 53 and only use a credit card for my purchases (I just about know how to do online banking!!!). Trouble is I've clothes to take back to Primark, for example, and things I need to order from Ebay, etc and the date for returns at Primark is due soon. What should I do? I've still not received it.
TIA.

My replacement Santander debit card took about 9 or 10 days.
Does the app track progress?

This happened to us with our John Lewis credit card. Despite being told a replacement would arrive in 5-7 days, nothing turned up. I eventually emailed their chief executive (email listed on Google) and got our cards plus compensation in 3 days!

Not that I know of 🤷‍♀️

I'd contact them and ask what's happening, I'd expect it to be there within a week. They might realise the request wasn't processed properly, so definitely worth checking.

Do you have access to a current account debit card for everyday spending in the meantime?

I meant to ask why you mentioned your age - I don't know if you're saying you're too young or too old to work out another way to pay for things.

I'm not very up on things of the modern world. Thank you for your answer. Yes, I have a debit card, but I can't get refunds you see 🤷‍♀️ without my credit card.

“Modern world” you are 53, the same age as me. Internet banking has been around 20 years. This aren’t “modern” things, they are just things we grew up with.

I know. Silly me.

It usually takes a week for a replacement card, so it's a day late however I would suggest that the horrendous weather last week is impacting postal services. Ring them if you're unsure and they'll be able to give you an update on progress.

In terms of refunds, are these in store purchases or online? If it's the latter the refund will be directed to your account number rather than the specific credit card.
If it's the former, check the timescales for the retailer. You will have upto 28 days in most cases and some don't necessarily need the physical card to refund. Next is a good example of this.

I was wondering if I should change banks. I'm not happy with their service.

Bit dramatic if a short delay in getting a new card is the only problem you've had with them. But why not? You can get a cash bonus for switching. But you'll need to use the Current Account Switch Service, which is definitely a 'modern world' facility.

I would suggest that most banks would have a similar card replacement timescale! A week is not unreasonable. Additionally if you say that you're struggling with online banking, changing banks over something this trivial would cause more effort/learning to navigate a new online system etc!

Take into store a copy of your credit card statement and ask if they can give you a refund either to your credit card or a different one.

Alternatively ask for a credit voucher instead?

Snackpocket · 28/01/2025 13:30

Wow that’s slow, I lost my wallet. I had a Barclaycard and reported it on the Saturday night. I had my new card by the Tuesday or Wednesday. Same with my NatWest debit card.

user1471867483 · 28/01/2025 19:17

I rang them this afternoon. They said to wait until tomorrow 🤷. Thank you for all your replies xxx I asked what if it doesn't come tomorrow and she said to ring back 🤦

This happened to me. It’s the post not the bank. We didn’t receive a letters delivery between 8th and 25th Jan. Lots of sorting offices have backlogs and they only deliver parcels and special delivery until it’s cleared. Absolutely mad it’s not better publicised.

I’ve never heard of a debit card that won’t allow you to receive a refund. Are you sure that is the case? Yes the card number won’t match that on the receipt but neither will your new credit card

MistressoftheDarkSide · 28/01/2025 20:14

Hope you get your card soon OP - had a right mare a couple of years ago with HSBC when my purse was stolen to do with wrong addresses still on file that took six weeks and three visits to branch to sort out - partly my fault, but it still shouldn't have taken as long as it did. Apparently computer said no to human override twice.....

But mainly I just wanted to show solidarity because although all this marvellous tech has "been with us for years", I too am not great with it, find it irritating and treat it on a need to use basis. I've had more fubars with apps and services than great experiences and although I've learned to do what I need to, I keep it at arms lengths.

Right now apparently Vinted is the answer to all my de-cluttering problems. I looked at it and then ran away whimpering. I use Mumsnet, occasionally Facebook, and my banking app for my one solitary account. And that's fine.

Today I cancelled my bank card coz it’s somewhere at home but can’t find it. So I asked if I could just order a new one without cancelling my old one coz I use my card on my phone in my google pay and the guy said your new card will be able to be used straight away it automatically updates your google pay with your new card before you’ve even received it …
and sure enough the last 4 digits of my card in my google pay have changed .

This was with Barclays .

you can also have a photo on your bank card which I find cool.
