To not understand why a mother would do this? Trigger warning - child abuse

I've been reading an article about child sex abuse in Cambodia, where both local men and international men rape children who are sold to them by usually mothers who owe lots of money. In a few cases it's because the father is ill and can no longer work. I feel sick with what I have just read. My question is this. Why would a mother sell their child for sex before putting themselves forward for sex with disgusting men? Why, just why would a mother do this?

Horrific but I assume it's down to more money sadly. X

WinterMorn · 23/01/2025 21:16

As awful as it is, the child will fetch a higher price.

The pimp who purchases the child is probably lying to the mother. Says things like - you kid is so beautiful, she will be a movie star, no one will, touch etc.

They’re desperate
its normalised to them
they’re on drink / drugs
they too have been abused
they have no moral compass
they don’t see it as so bad

Each case will be different
None of us know why or what they’ve gone through.

considering most mothers would die protecting their children, I too don’t get it - but I’ve not walked their shoes

MrsJHernandez · 23/01/2025 21:36

Agree with the other PPs. Way more money.

Men will literally travel around the world to abuse children because they're unlikely to be caught, the children are easier to access because of the willing parent and its probaby dirt cheap to Westerners.

It's disgusting. I can't imagine ever selling my child. I find it completely inexcusable, regardless of one's dire circumstances. Some women have children just so she can sell them for sex.

I watched a documentary about a group who pose as paedophiles and set up stings to get the parents arrested. This one mother literally said he could do whatever he wanted to any of her children, including a baby. He just had to pick which ones he wanted to "spend time with" from a lineup. Its sick, sick, sick.

Various reasons , from no attachment, to lose one to save the others , to being lied to and everything in between.

As to why they don't do it? Mainly because... no one is buying.

tillytoodles1 · 23/01/2025 21:45

Being starving and desperate is something we don't understand. It's a horrible thing to do but we've never walked in their shoes, and it's also a horrible thing to even think of why they need to do it.

Extreme poverty is the likely driver but mothers are statistically the primary abusers of children so it's going to be them if anyone sadly.

Where are these statistics? I've never heard this. My experiences through work and those around me would be the opposite to this.

Presumably the type of person who will pay to rape a child doesn’t want to have sex with an adult.

Choccyscofffy · 23/01/2025 21:52

Where’s your judgement for the fathers? Why don’t you ask them to pimp themselves out, why does it have to be the mothers?

Where did you get this from? I thought it was statistically men who are close - mostly step dads.

i too cannot fathom it and it makes me sick to my stomach.

Pollyanna87 · 23/01/2025 22:00

Get the parents hooked on drugs, then they’ll do anything.

It used to be the case, though I haven't seen recent figures, that while sexual abuse of children is almost entirely men, other forms of child abuse (emotional, physical and neglect) is more often women as they are more often carers. Emotional abuse, physical abuse and child neglect being more prevalent (or possibly, just more reported/convicted) than sexual abuse.

Marble10 · 23/01/2025 22:02

In some countries it really doesn't seem like they love and respect their children like how we do.
It's so sad and horrific the stuff that goes on, so sickening.

Yes, men are the main sexual abusers but for everything else it's the mother by a huge margin.

I know a professor who studied in this area, mainly work for UN and other charities trying to break the cycle., it's very normalised the mothers were likely abused themselves, the older sisters and/ or brothers likewise so younger kids see it as helping the family and a duty. The levels of poverty in some SE countries aren't like poverty in the UK and there is no social system. Plus some countries like Cambodia have been through horrific wars and governments leading to entire communities being wiped out in living memory (read up on the Pol Pot orphans to get perspective).
It's horrific but the main horror should be levelled at the men who go not the families indeed women living there.

I'm not sure about the main horror being the men who buy (though I obviously find them despicable). If the mothers weren't selling their kids for sex they'd sell them for some other purpose if they could. The main horror seems to be the poverty that makes people so desperate.

Apparently, most of the paedophiles are Cambodian men.
