Working for family

DH and I both worked in the family business for 15 years but we left amicably at the end of November. We gave other members of the family 12 months notice that we were leaving so they could learn the ropes and take over but no one bothered.
In December it was apparent that without our (my for admin) help, the family business would seriously struggle as no one knew what to do so I stepped back in and continued my old role. I told BiL (DH’s older brother) that I would be invoicing for my time and he agreed. He has now said him and his partner are ready to take over so I have told him I will send him my invoice for December & 3 weeks of January and he replied saying -
“I hope you are not being serious as it has been a very tricky time for both of us .. your help is enormously appreciated.. thank-you”

AIBU? I have saved him a fortune and kept the family business on track!

Hmm tricky one ... can you ofset it against another benefit? Eg share of profits for the month or take an IOU?

You should made yourself 100% clear before doing the work.
What does DH say?

If you are in charge of admin I'd be paying myself!
Did you have a contract and agreed timesheets etc?

Sounds like leaving was a great idea.
