To Ask If You Hate Watching Cringey Stuff?

RoselandCornwall · 21/01/2025 17:09

I’ve just watched a video someone uploaded on Facebook where the boy I had a crush on in school was dancing in a school disco not with me - in a group - sort of with a girl but not in a ‘smoochy’ way (thank goodness or there would’ve been absolute SCENES! Grin)

Even though I had a huge crush on him as a teenager - the footage is cringe - let’s face it - even the word ‘disco’ is cringe !

I’m also thinking about a meeting I had with a bloke I was trying to impress last summer and I feel I just maybe acted a bit cringe!! 😭

Also on Sunday I walked down the street looking a right scruff then proceeded to bump into just about everyone I’d ever known! 🤣

Maybe I’m a sensitive soul but this cringe thing - it’s horrible isn’t it ??!

I really suffer with cringe and secondhand embarrassment. I could never watch X factor auditions or even The Office. It's awful and makes me want to literally leave the room! I get a physical reaction 😂

TeaAndChaos · 21/01/2025 17:13

I'm the same as PP - I suffer from second hand embarrassment and cringe like I'll turn films and tv shows off because I get a strong physical reaction.

Omg me too!!

I posted this basically to try and get some solidarity - I’ve just watched a few mins of this disco vid again 😭😭😭

I'm exactly the same and couldn't watch any of that stuff either.

I even tried to rewatch Gilmore Girls lately (which I used to love) and I cringed so hard and cracked my neck.

ElfridaEtAl · 21/01/2025 17:17

I’m the same as PPs.

I turn something off if it gets too bad then go back and watch it later when I’ve calmed myself down.

DH, who can watch anything and not bat an eye, finds this both bizarre and hilarious.

RoselandCornwall · 21/01/2025 17:19

In this ‘disco’ by the way - the music that’s playing is

‘Tunnel of Love’ by Fun Boy Three !!

Anyone want to guess our ages??! Grin

Not just you OP, I have to watch The Apprentice in 'bits' - like watch a bit then "OK, OK, pause it, pause it, this is SO hard to watch!" I have a breather and then carry on! 😂

I wouldn't even attempt to watch The Apprentice - you're a braver woman than me! It would finish me off!

I generally try to avoid anything that features members of the general public, including radio phone-ins, as they're guaranteed to set off my cringe reflex.

I bet you’ll love that clip of that chap phoning into Saturday Superstore and dissing Five Star!!!

I'm not to bad but my DH hates cringey stuff (The Apprentice is a good example, and some Dragon's Den pitches too) and has to hide his face in my hair for the duration Grin

After 12 years from moving house, my parents have decided to go through the 60 odd boxes (boxes are wine bottle boxes) and I am made to go through them tomorrow. I hate looking at old photos of myself. Some of the clothes DM bought me as a child were horrid - brown corduroy pinafore dress, green tracksuit with top with red and blue stripes. Yet OK seeing photos of my soft toys before they become loved.

95% of the photos are in pristine condition. Though the photos that went in those albums where you pulled a sheet and the entire sheet was sticky have changed colour a bit due to the glue drying out and fallen to the bottom of the pages.

Parents are ditching scenes, majority of photos where someone has eyes shut and school performances photos where I'm not featured. DM did a sideline of selling copies of photos to friends' parents, back in the day

Auburngal · 21/01/2025 17:48

As to cringe stuff. I like watching The Apprentice when they do massive cock ups - 100 chickens for 100 pizzas - that was an early one (series 2) and buying catering cheddar to sell to the French (series 3) the cash and carry visit was to buy things such as paper plates, bags for the goods, NOT cheese. Plus the PM wanted to cook sausages on a tin can which failed to work. If they bought one of those portable stoves, a couple of gas cannisters - it would worked.

Then there's the stupid characters they create. Pantsman, Solomon's business plan where he had 2 pages of different ideas of his logo.

Do you remember last year’s Apprentice where they did a savoury food in crumble? 😭

The weather presenter fluffed a word the other night and instead of moving swiftly on she kept trying and failing to correct herself. DP and I both leapt for the remote at the same time, shouting MUTE IT! MUTE IT!

I cannot tolerate embarrassment.

They did fish cakes and crumble. So sweet breadcrumbs on fish cakes. Despite refunds for their food, the girls won.

I always think when doing these corporate things, normally you pay for a chef and assistants to cook the food, not the corporate organisers.

Biffbaff · 21/01/2025 18:11

Yes! There's so much of it on social media and I just can't! I speedily scroll on by. I couldn't even stand Mr Bean when I was 5 years old.

Auburngal · 21/01/2025 18:12

There was one episode where they did tours in Dubai and only limited the tourists ONE sodding glass of water each. Plus didn't cater for someone with dietary requirements. I cannot remember what the DR was.

Oh I love cringe!!! Thats WHY I enjoy The Office so much. I love the terrible Xfactor auditions😂 My friend is is like you guys. Runs away from the cringe. I love to lean into it. 😂

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 21/01/2025 18:16

Oh I've found my people! I can't .... literally cannot watch anything cringe. The Office, Alan Partridge - anything like that. My kids are laughing and I'm sitting there thinking 'why would something that looks like a normal day only with added embarrassment, be funny?' I just do not get it.

TurtlesDoNotPetsMake · 21/01/2025 20:13

God yes, I hate seeing anyone uncomfortable. Beadles About was a nightmare to watch.
I can't watch sport because I feel so bloody uncomfortable about the people who don't win.

I'd love to hear a therapist's opinion of why some feel it so acutely.
