Anyone up? Feeling sorry for myself!

I've done well on the run up to Christmas and managed to avoid the bugs and nasties, but not any more....

This is 4th night I've been up and down like a yo-yo with the most violent cough I've ever had. It's either an aggressive tickle that feels like someone is trying to persistently covid test my throat (remember those!!), although now a sore and tight chest irritation has joined the party. I have coughed until I've been sick several times tonight, my head is throbbing, chest is killing me and my ribs feel like they've been kicked by a horse. I don't have a temperature just a bunged up head cold, really painful throat and this damn cough.

I've tied....steam, Benylin, Covonia night time, honey mixed with a drop of brandy and hot water, just plain water, fizzy water, orange juice, soluble paracetomol (to gargle painful throat and wondered if it would help the 'tickle' attacks - it didn't), Vicks all over (including soles of feet) and just about everything else I can think of. Nothing is making a blind bit of difference, especially at night.

It's also the first anniversary of my lovely Mum's passing today, so I wasn't looking forward to this day in any event. I'm retreating under the duvet (sitting up obviously, I'm not giving the cough the satisfaction of laying down), if anyone wants me!!

I'm sorry about your mum💐

I'm currently up and researching wardrobes. I find that lemsip really helps when I have a cold.

Daffydoll · 21/01/2025 05:05

I had this. It really is horrible. The only thing that helped me sleep was Night Nurse. Wish you better soon

coldscottishmum · 21/01/2025 05:05

I’m so sorry about your mum. Our house has just recovered from exactly what your suffering with - like you nothing worked. It’s awful but it does ride out, rest as much as possible with plenty of fluids (and get yourself some of your favourite food in). Be kind to yourself. I’m wide awake with pregnancy nausea and I’m feeling sorry for myself too!

Do you want to tell us about your mum?

AllTooWellTV · 21/01/2025 05:12

Ugh I hear you. We’ve JUST come out of the flu that started Christmas Day and my husband was coughing every 30 seconds. I was timing it.

Keep your fluids up, and to help sleep at night you can use codeine which is what they used to use in cough medicine. I would say only at night though! After 2.5 weeks I did get some OTC robittusin with the cough suppressant in only for night times too.

Sorry about your mum. At least this gives you an excuse to bed rot xxx

LtdEdition01 · 21/01/2025 05:43

Gargle with soluble aspirin and I would see your gp.

MuchuseasaChocolateTeapot · 21/01/2025 05:45

Yep, me and DH have it too. I’m going on 2 bloody weeks of it. Cough and dry throat followed by chest infection then sinusitis, now awake sweating and with a weirdly sore throat. Am on monster antibiotics now and cough seems to have abated finally. Going to London on a theatre trip on Thursday, don’t want to go and pick up more flipping viruses in cramped theatres and public transport but family will think I’m neurotic (I am).

MuchuseasaChocolateTeapot · 21/01/2025 05:47

Sorry that didn’t help at all did it? I found more pillows helpful and a cold bedroom but warm duvet.

User09678 · 21/01/2025 05:52

Oh love, I'm so sorry to hear about your Mum, it's so so hard. You sound like you're feeling dreadful, just do what you need to do to try and feel comfortable and remind yourself that your symptoms will pass eventually Xx

Youngheartsalittletogetherness · 21/01/2025 05:53

Hopefully you are sleeping now and not reading this.
Sorry for your loss, the firsts are hard.

Theextraordinaryisintheordinary · 21/01/2025 06:04

Sorry about your mum. Hope you have some peace today to reflect on her but I guess you do that all the time.

I’m awake with the same thing. I’m exhausted. Keep drinking to soothe my throat. The cough/throat tickle is driving me nuts. Made me sick too and I almost wet myself. I’ve got students at work later this week but not sure I’ll get in. Feel like once it’s cleared I’ll need some time to recouperate. Lemsips are helping me.

Hope you feel better soon. Lots of fluids.x

Theextraordinaryisintheordinary · 21/01/2025 07:07

I’ve just gargled apple cider vinegar with warm water & salt. It’s settled my throat.

Sebsaloysius · 21/01/2025 14:03

Thanks everyone, so many people seem to be suffering with it at the moment, I know it's that time of the year, but it seems particularly rampant this year.

I went to the GP this morning as I really couldn't fancy many more nights like the last 4, plus the coughing is pretty incessant even during the day now, and I'm starting to sound ever so wheezy and breathless. My doctors are brilliant, but they don't dish out pills unless they really think they're needed, so I would quite surprised to come away with antibiotics and steroids! I just hope they kick in soon.

Thanks for the messages about Mum too, she was almost 86 and had two life-limiting illnesses, although in the end she died quite suddenly. My Dad was almost quite literally heartbroken and he wasn't far behind her, he died at the beginning of April. It is hard without them both, especially as we moved them in with us in the later years of their lives - I miss them both terribly, but glad they weren't apart for too long.

Sorry for the loss of your parents that's so sad to lose them both in quick succession.
I was friendly with an elderly gent who stayed round the corner from a shop I worked in and when he died his wife wasn't long after they'd been married 60years and wed when he returned from fighting in Italy in WW2.
