Can employer just change my JD?

I have been in my current position for the past seven and a half years. Recently, there has been a proposal to significantly reduce my responsibilities and assign a substantial portion of my role to another team member, which would leave me with only one primary task on a full-time basis. I appreciate the variety that my current role offers, and I prefer not to focus solely on one single thing day in/day out.

Does anyone know if they're allowed to do this? Just modify my job description taking out a large part of it?

Has there been any discussion about your performance? Are they removing tasks because they think you're not completing them or you have too much to do? They should be consulting with you on this, but they are allowed to make changes to your job. Business needs change, so jobs often have to change with them.

Thank you for your reply. No, no discussions on my performance - I've always had good reviews so I don't understand it. I don't know of any reason they'd want me to leave but if they do end up changing things as they intend to, I would be looking to move on - and they probably know that I would.
