Had the flu - left with a crackly chest

When I breathe it sounds like popping candy. I’m coughing loads and it sounds dreadful. Lots of mucous moving around and it sounds loud, it even woke me up from sleep.

I went to the doctors yesterday, he said it was just the after effects of the virus but didn’t listen to my back, just my upper chest.

I’ve got no appetite, I’m tired too.

Should I try and get another appointment? I’m not sure what to do. The sounds when I exhale sound like gurgling/popping candy or a creaking door. If that make sense.

Me personally, I would go with what the doctor has said as I have had this happen a few times and it's always gone away after a few days.

If it happened again and it hung around for more than a week to 10 days, then I might go to Dr. But it can take 4 weeks to completely get over a cough.

But this is only my opinion based on my experience. I am not medically trained.

My chest was making creaking and squeaking sounds, they gave me antibiotics.

Stopsnowing · 16/01/2025 08:54

It could develop into pneumonia - you need to see a doctor.

Arlanymor · 16/01/2025 08:55

Mind turned out to be pneumonia and I was given antibiotics.

Caramelbarrel · 16/01/2025 09:01

That’s what I thought re: pneumonia but the doctor seemed to say because it has been less than a week (started on Saturday) that I need to give it longer.
When I’m up and walking around I can’t hear the noises, it’s only really when I’m sitting or laying.
He checked my oxygen levels and they were fine. I’ve got my own oximeter at home too and my fever has gone - that’s why I think he wasn’t that worried.

It was a specific ‘chest clinic’ doctor I saw at my local surgery - so I’m surprised he didn’t listen to my back too.

I guess I’m not sure what to do, I might try calling tomorrow morning if it’s still bad for another appointment, as I feel they won’t take me seriously if I call today, when I literally saw someone yesterday.

I had the same but it then developed into a secondary infection. I knew that it was a new development because I felt absolutely dreadful, having been improving previously. Delirious, feverish, aches, dizziness...just awful.
I know that you can get 'walking pneumonia' but - if you're generally feeling better and it's just the noise worrying you - I'd make sure to sleep propped up, steam and get fresh air, and wait before going back to dr if your overall symptoms worsen or don't improve further.

biscuitsandbooks · 16/01/2025 09:11

It's pretty normal to have symptoms like this after a nasty cold. I'm not sure I'd bother with a doctor unless it wasn't improving or was getting worse.

Caramelbarrel · 16/01/2025 09:12

@biscuitsandbooks I suppose I just found it pretty alarming to hear really. I guess it might sound worse than it is.

Yeah, it can be a bit unnerving but I would listen to your doctor and see how you feel over the next couple of days. It could be that you end up needing antibiotics but equally it could just easily be something that clears on its' own.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 16/01/2025 09:20

I'd go back I've ended up with pneumonia after flu.

Oh maybe different then because I was given antibiotics at the point when I had been unwell for well over two weeks. Get well soon!

XWKD · 16/01/2025 09:21

I've been like that since Christmas. I haven't eaten much in the last month.

MaryGreenhill · 16/01/2025 09:26

My DH and l both had this .
We took expectorant cough mixture x 4 a day and an anti histamine daily .
It's taking ages to go but it is improving.
Hope it gets better soon.

Crazyworldmum · 16/01/2025 09:41

I started getting ill just high fever and cough yesterday and today I’m like this , high fever , body aches , feel dizzy I also have an awful taste of blood every time I cough but feel stupid to go to gp on day 2 but oxygen level is ok
I’ve had pneumonia before and a few lung infections specially growing and 3 x as an adult too . Still I feel he will just think I’m wasting their time .

I have the exact same doubt you have if I should wait or not

Caramelbarrel · 16/01/2025 10:13

I’m using a Himalayan salt pipe to try and clear some of the mucous. And checking my oxygen using my oximeter. Have zero energy, the lack of appetite probably doesn’t help that either.
