To just want to use a fucking light switch

We’ve had Alexa bulbs (other smart bulbs available) for the last few years.

Alexa is getting more stubborn at turning the bloody things on.

Would I be unreasonable to ding the whole
fucking lot out and just use the bloody switch instead.

Its honestly driving me nuts.

Same with our sound bar. It has no buttons-wtf?

RandomButtons · 15/01/2025 22:56

Ditch them. It’s just another over complicated thing to go wrong.

TeenLifeMum · 15/01/2025 22:58

My friend had them fitted but soon realised “Alexa, turn on living room light” took longer than using a switch. Great for disabled people maybe but on the whole, not worth it for most of us.

thingsineverthoughtidsay · 15/01/2025 23:12

Yes, get rid!!! We had them and I hated them. Even tech-loving DH now agrees they were a stupid idea! Having to ask Alexa 10 times to turn the lights on before she would listen, just ridiculous!!

Mabelface · 15/01/2025 23:36

I like it. I've got it set to routines where I just say Alexa morning, or goodnight and everything comes on or switches off. Just shorten the commands.

Quinlan · 15/01/2025 23:39

You can control them from your phone too though. I like being able to dim individual bulbs or turn off individual bulbs if we want it darker or lighter for movies etc, or if i only want the bay window spotlights on and and not all the spotlights. Its handy! Never ask alexa to do it as it takes too long.

Moonshine5 · 15/01/2025 23:41

Our bathroom lights up every time you enter.
Even at 3am !!!!!!

JacquesHarlow · 15/01/2025 23:42

I would never have them. How many people who own them, have put them on a separate SSID with client isolation?

How many people on this thread will also attack me in ignorance and say “nothing will ever happen” etc?

Sugarfish · 15/01/2025 23:45

Yeah the Alexa lights annoy me but my boyfriend loves them. So I tolerate them.

Although, he didn’t love them so much the other night when he fell asleep with the bedroom light on. When I came to bed I asked it to turn them off, to which it boomed out “BEDROOM IS NOT RESPONDING. CHECK YOUR CONNECTION AND TRY AGAIN”

CranfordScones · 15/01/2025 23:48

When all the apps become obsolete because the companies no longer have an incentive to maintain their old products.... your light switch will still be working just fine.

hotfirelog · 15/01/2025 23:48

I with you

I don't know what can happen but it would never occur to me to have this stuff

@Iwrotethelyricstoaxlf use a fucking switch then. Most of us do and it works well.

Ayechinnyreckon · 15/01/2025 23:53

I'd hate that!

We have hue bulbs, which I love BUT they have light switches so best of both worlds!

beauborino · 15/01/2025 23:53

My DP is obsessed with apps ,light bulbs etc -Alexa is the OW 😁love him ❤️

UnNiddeRides · 15/01/2025 23:56

It must be annoying to have paid for a thing that you can shout at to do something & it doesn’t, so yes, just push the switch with your finger.

Yes we have. If anything ever happens to DH, I will have to get rid of the lot as he has all sorts set up that I have no idea how to ever undo.

Mine does that when I turn the light on too… isn’t that how lights are meant to work? 🤔

TheBoysAndTheBallet · 16/01/2025 00:02

Good luck getting Alexa to light the candles if there's ever a power cut!

JohnRedding · 16/01/2025 00:04

Tech overload

I work in the industry.

A lot of it is adding complexity to life not reducing it

UnNiddeRides · 16/01/2025 00:07

It’s my turn to do Christmas dinner next year & it won’t be punctuated by increasingly loud demands for ‘Alexa! play Christmas music!’

CoastalCalm · 16/01/2025 00:16

We have them in our lamps and find them really handy as the switches aren’t easily accessible behind furniture etc. It also means I can set up a routine to switch on bedroom lamp which casts enough light for me to get ready for bed and is more ambient

JustAnotherManicMomday · 16/01/2025 00:28

We went for philips hue, control from your phone or the remotes.

Crazyworldmum · 16/01/2025 00:28

We have them too plus heaters and boiler on Alexa and a few plug in stuff . She is a bit of a moo at times nd makes me repeat stuff but works great 98% of the time

Stealthmodemama · 16/01/2025 00:32

Can you use a phone app to do it?

Moonshine5 · 16/01/2025 00:34

Saschka · 15/01/2025 23:59

It's a sensor. It detects movement and switches on. I find it annoying during the night.
