Work said I owe time in lieu

Hello so I work in a school kitchen and the other day the school was shut. Now the lady I worked with let me know it was shut and said wait to hear from the area manager or the office I said I'd rather lose the money than work at another site but will wait and see where I'm sent. I waited till an hour before my start time and didn't hear anything so had no work that day which was fine. So another kitchen was closed and one person got to work elsewhere where but there was nothing for the other one so she had the day off. Anyway the lady I work with phoned the office the next day and they said I was wrong for not calling in and I owe them time in lieu as they're still going to pay me for the day and I need to go in on an inset day instead (which I'd normally have off) aibu in thinking it's management that should have contacted me and arranged for me to go elsewhere or to let me know there's no work for me? A couple of people I've spoke to including assistant head said that can't be right 😬 also just to add I've stayed behind many times and not been paid as it's been expected of me.

I used to work in a school kitchen many years ago. If we didn't go to another site we didn't get paid. It's up to them to tell you what you should do. I could sometimes get to my school and work there, it Was usually only closed to pupils.
