To wonder why pukka tea is so much more expensive

Used to be under £3. Now standard £4.75!

Well, tesco can have them on offer for £3.50 often enough, so I suspect it's the tesco mark up that's the difference. Pukka might be getting a bit more but the real ker-ching is in the tesco tills.

It’s called branding and ‘added value’ based on the brand alone . Buy the supermarket own label if you can - it’s probably the same tea.

Inflation.

Employers expenses going up.

Overheads more expensive than they used to be.

Climate change affecting the tea crop.

It's always worth shopping around for Pukka Tea, I wouldn't dream of paying £4.75! I really like the Three Mint one. At the moment it's £2.99 per box plus postage from Staples, or £3.50 per box from Waitrose if you have a delivery.

Amazon often have bulk offers, too. I get it 8 or 12 boxes at a time, 2 cups a day I do get through it!

If anyone has any recommendations for a cheaper version, I'd love to know.

Yeah tea, especially nice tea is becoming a luxury. Same with chocolate, have you noticed how hard they are all pushing the new caramilk mixes? Thats no organic trend its because its a lot cheaper than real chocolate.

I remember in July the news was full of a disastrous tea harvest as a result of terrible weather. That will have affected tea prices for the coming year.

TheTecknician · 10/01/2025 17:19

I've never heard of Pukka tea. I do like Pukka pies though!

Clipper do some nice, much more reasonably priced ones. I mostly drink bog standard Chamomile or Peppermint which is about £1 for 20 from Waitrose.

HPandthelastwish · 10/01/2025 17:28

Even at £4.75 it only works out as 23p a cup.
I make a cup with it and then put the tea bag in a flask of hot water to stew so get at least 2-3 cups out of it and pretty much does the day plus I only have to boil the kettle once. It's not like PG tips etc which go horrible if left to stew and lose flavour.

I also buy in bulk from Staples!

The only herbal tea I have found that is as nice as loose leaf herbal tea but I can't always be bothered with it

I get it on Amazon - the price is getting ridiculous but not everywhere does it near me. Aldi had some of the chamomile but that was a one off. I am not a fan of herbal teas generally but do like some of the pukha ones.
