I have a gnawing anxiety right now. The economy is tanking. I am actually financially ok, but I worry for the people who aren’t, and what this spells for future elections/movements. I worry for my kids’ future too. I really want to jump ship, as do a lot of my highly-educated, economically-active friends. I guess this will dip the country even more if it comes to pass. What to do?

Where are you going to go?

NoSquirrels · 09/01/2025 13:51

You can jump ship if you want to - where are you going?

Where are you going to go?

Yep…now there’s a question. Australia? The moon?

How can the economy tanking have anything to do with the far right? Rachel Reeves budget hasn’t exactly help the economy has it.

Moonlightstars · 09/01/2025 13:56

Off you go then makes a bit more space for others to become higher earners.

LittleRedRidingHoody · 09/01/2025 13:57

Not just you. I get very overwhelmed looking at the news, and am ashamed to say I often actively avoid it.

Not sure I'd leave - lots of the world has gone to shit, not just the UK! Friends in Australia are struggling too. The easiest place for me to move is the US (it would be an 'easy' move through work) and I strongly believe we're better off here which gives me some perspective.

Jump ship to where? Where is there that isn't struggling, that will allow people to just move in? We scream so loud about not letting all and sundry into the country, yet people feel they can jump ship from the UK when things are tough (and let's be honest, not even close to what people entering the UK are running from).

Because the far right usually gains popularity and power at times of economic struggle, because people feel desperate and need scape goats. Eg Nazi Germany as the most obvious example but it's a general trend in modern history.

I haven’t expressed any anti-immigration views here, have I? And why wouldn’t people ‘jump ship’ for a better life regardless of their starting point? It’s not a race to the bottom. Labour have proved that the rot is endemic and I fear the only political option for people will be the far right now. I loathed the Tories but have always disliked Starmer. I held my nose and voted for him.

Person flees for their life, risks their life to get a life = pesky immigrant, how dare they
Person flees emigrates just because they feel their lifestyle may be compromised = yay, why not, you won't be one of those immgrant peopl
