Toilet lid left up when flushing

I hate it when guests flush the toilet with the lid up. Everyone seems to do it. I am on long term cancer maintenance treatment and although I’m fine I still worry about aerosol spray. Tests have shown that feacal matter can end up on your toothbrushes etc.
I bought a very nice polite enamel sign asking to put the lid down before flushing.I have it on top of the cistern so people can see it.
Is this rude of me and would any of you be offended by a sign like this in someone’s house

They might close the lid to flush and then lift it afterwards.

You can't live in a sterile environment so perhaps make one of your bathrooms solely yours to use.

Valhalla17 · 09/01/2025 02:10

It's basic hygiene OP, so you're definitely not BU.
Put your sign up pronto!

CalicoPusscat · 09/01/2025 02:14

See nothing wrong with putting a sign up and forewarning guests.

There is still spray even after flushing loo seat down so might be better to not have guests? Or leave wipes out for door handle?

I put my toothbrush in cupboard and clean the sink/taps before brushing my teeth. We are a lid closed household but my DH sometimes forgets and as you say visitors are a law unto themselves.

I don't think your sign is rude at all. It's fine for you to ask this (and not that it should matter, but especially because of your health condition, as a friend I'd want to take extra care).

Unclench a bit

DontCryForMeArgentuna · 09/01/2025 03:24

Well as the saying goes, ‘your house your rules’.

People are gross.

TappyGilmore · 09/01/2025 03:36

I don’t think it’s rude and wouldn’t be offended by it. But I don’t know if it will make someone close the lid if they wouldn’t normally do that.

We definitely have the lid closed all the time, the cat will try to go for a swim if she comes across a toilet with the lid up.

Unclench a bit

It's her home...and she's undergoing Cancer treatment! She doesn't need to "unclench" at all.

Surely you lift the lid after flushing anyway to check the bowl is clean? If you do then the aerosol created when flushing will be getting into the bathroom at that point. Not as much as when flushing lid up but it'll definitely contaminate the bathroom

CheshireDing · 09/01/2025 04:02

I hate it when people leave the lid up and flush, why do people want spray up the walls, around them etc ?! I have never understood not putting the lid down.

Put your sign up OP

Princessconsuelabananahammock9 · 09/01/2025 04:17

It's so gross.

I love your sign. I don't think people understand how disgusting it is to flush with lid up.

I don't unless I've been ill and then I wait a minute.

I just close the lid and flush.

Diomi · 09/01/2025 05:40

I read a study which said that disinfectant dispensers were more effective for people who were immunocompromised.

K90 · 09/01/2025 05:50

“Use one of my bathrooms for sole use “ I only have have one bathroom!

I would assume they’d flushed with the lid down and lifted it to check everything was gone and that it was clean.

DappledThings · 09/01/2025 06:27

I hate going to the toilet and seeing the lid closed. Makes me think there's something hiding there that someone couldn't flush away!

You have no idea if people are closing it and reopening it. Even if I did close it to flush I would still open it again afterwards.
